Denver Broncos

8/17/2006

Ron Dayne, den

Dayne is expected to miss the Broncos preseason game on Saturday against the Tennessee Titans due to turf toe. The running back suffered the injury in the team's preseason-opening 20-13 loss to the Detroit Lions on Friday. He has missed four practices with the injury.

8/12/2006

Jay Cutler, den

Cutler had a solid debut for the Denver Broncos in Friday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions. The 11th pick in the draft was 16-of-22 for 192 yards and a touchdown.

8/10/2006

Courtney Brown, den

Brown underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wedneday, the Denver Broncos announced Thursday. The Broncos defensive end is expected to miss all four of Denver's preseason games but should return for the Sept. 10 regular season opener against the St. Louis Rams.

8/5/2006

Gerard Warren, den

Warren will be out 2-4 weeks after dislocating a toe on his left foot Saturday at Denver Broncos training camp. The Broncos defensive lineman was injured on a goal-line drill when rookie running back Mike Bell tried to find an opening in the defense from two yards out.

7/27/2006

Todd Sauerbrun, den

Sauerbrun lost his appeal this week of his four-game suspension for using the banned dietary supplement ephedra. The Broncos' punter said he knowingly took an over-the-counter weight loss product this summer that he strongly suspected contained ephedra. "I wanted to be up for my workout," said Sauerbrun, who is allowed to attend training camp, but won't be allowed around the team during his suspension.

7/26/2006

Adam Meadows, den

The Panthers released Meadows on Tuesday, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent. Meadows is attempting a comeback after retiring two years ago. "We just felt like he hadn't played in two years and that it was best for us to release his rights as soon as possible and give him an opportunity to sign (with another team)," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said.

7/7/2006

Todd Sauerbrun, den

Sauerbrun was suspended for the first four regular-season games after testing positive for the banned supplement ephedra, a person close to the player told the Associated Press on Friday on the condition of anonymity. The Broncos' punter is attending the team's three-day minicamp this week. Sauerbrun led the NFC in punting from 2001-2003, while with the Carolina Panthers. He averaged 43.8 yards per punt for Denver last season.

Ashley Lelie, den

After declining to attend Denver's offseason conditioning program, Lelie is now boycotting the team's three-day minicamp. The Broncos' wide receiver and his agent, Peter Schaffer, said they want a trade. Lelie is entering the final season of the rookie contract he signed as the 19th overall pick in 2002, but doesn't feel he has the opportunity to be the featured receiver in Denver's offense.

5/18/2006

Willie Middlebrooks, den

Middlebrooks signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos on Thursday after a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers. The Broncos drafted the cornerback in the first round in 2001. He played four seasons in Denver before he was traded to the 49ers in 2005. He appeared in five games in San Francisco in three separate stints and was waived for the fourth and final time in December.

5/11/2006

Javon Walker, den

Walker signed a one-year, $2.15 million contract with the Broncos on Wednesday. The deal could become six years and over $42 million, if Walker can regain his 2004 Pro Bowl form, where he caught 89 passes for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns with the Green Bay Packers.

5/3/2006

Nate Webster, den

The Broncos signed Webster to a one-year contract on Tuesday. The linebacker played the last two seasons with Cincinnati, but appeared in only one game in 2005. He suffered a knee injury in 2004 and missed most of that year.

4/29/2006

Javon Walker, den

Walker was dealt to Denver on Saturday in exchange for the Broncos' second-round draft pick. The wide receiver had grown disgruntled in Green Bay and had vowed to never play again for the Packers after they refused to redo his contract.

3/30/2006

Keith Burns, den

Burns signed a one-year contract with Denver on Thursday, keeping him in the city where the linebacker has spent 11 of his 13 seasons. Burns has 222 special teams tackles and 75 defensive tackles in 182 career regular-season games. His 12 career postseason appearances is 10th in Broncos history.

3/23/2006

Javon Walker, den

Walker might be in for another story-filled offseason as the wide receiver did not show up Wednesday for Green Bay's offseason program. Walker has threatened to hold out and has sought a trade. Walker suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Packers' season-opener last season.

3/12/2006

Ron Dayne, den

Ron Dayne agreed to a three-year deal, including a $750,000 signing bonus, to remain with the Denver Broncos.

3/11/2006

Gerard Warren, den

Warren re-signed with the Denver Broncos Saturday, agreeing to a six-year deal. The defensive end joined the Broncos last season and had 44 tackles and three sacks, helping Denver rank second in run defense at 85.0 yards per game.

3/7/2006

Courtney Brown, den

Brown signed a contract extension through the 2009 season with the Denver Broncos Tuesday. The 28-year-old defensive end joined Denver last season as a free agent after playing five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

2/21/2006

John Lynch, den

Lynch and the Broncos agreed to a contract extension Tuesday that will keep the hard-hitting safety in Denver through the 2008 season. Terms were not disclosed. Lynch made his second straight Pro Bowl and the seventh of his career in 2005, when he had four sacks and 61 tackles as the leader of the Denver secondary.

2/9/2006

Sam Brandon, den

Brandon and the Broncos agreed to a contract extension on Thursday. Terms were not disclosed. The safety, a fourth-round pick in the 2002 draft, appeared in 14 games last season for Denver, playing defense and special teams. He had 20 tackles, three pass breakups and one fumble recovery.

2/8/2006

Jake Plummer, den

The groin strain injury Plummer suffered in the AFC championship game won't prevent him from participating in offseason workouts. The Broncos' quarterback, however, won't play in the Pro Bowl. Tennessee Titans' quarterback Steve McNair is filling his roster spot as a replacement.

1/22/2006

Jake Plummer, den

Plummer was harassed all afternoon, completing 18 of 30 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the Broncos' 34-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game Sunday.

1/15/2006

Champ Bailey, den

In a key play leading to Denver's 27-13 playoff win over the defending Super Bowl champs Saturday, Bailey intercepted a Tom Brady pass in his own end zone and ran the ball back 100 yards in the third quarter. New England tight end Ben Watson chased down Bailey and knocked him down at tbe Patriots' one-yard line. The pick set up a one-yard touchdown rush by Mike Anderson, giving the Broncos a 17-6 lead.

1/13/2006

Stephen Alexander, den

Limited earlier in the week by a sore toe, Alexander practiced without any major problems on Thursday, and he plans to be available for Saturday's playoff battle with the New England Patriots. The Broncos' tight end will split time at the position with Jeb Putzier.

1/10/2006

Darrent Williams, den

After practicing with the Broncos on Monday, Williams admitted that he will not be at full strength by the time Saturday's playoff game against the New England Patriots rolls around. The rookie cornerback, who was a second-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, has been sidelined since straining his groin in Week 14, missing Denver's last three games of the regular season. He expects to serve as a backup this weekend.

1/5/2006

Darrent Williams, den

Williams has declared himself ready for the Broncos' postseason run after working out with the team on Wednesday. The rookie cornerback, who was a second-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, has been sidelined since straining his groin in Week 14, missing Denver's last three games of the regular season.

12/28/2005

Jake Plummer, den

Plummer is expected to handle the majority of the snaps with the Broncos' first-team offense in practice this week and be in the starting lineup for Saturday's regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers. However, since Denver has a playoff spot already secured, the quarterback's playing time likely will be limited as a precautionary measure, trying to avoid injury. Backup Bradlee Van Pelt could see the most extensive action of his NFL career as a result.

12/27/2005

Al Wilson, den

On Monday, Wilson underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his right thumb. According to Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, the linebacker will not play in Sunday's regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers, but he should be available for the team's first playoff game.

Tatum Bell, den

Bell is expected to get the starting nod and handle the majority of the carries in Saturday's regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers. The running back will be filling in for regular starter Mike Anderson, who was on crutches after spraining his ankle in last weekend's win over the Oakland Raiders. Bell has failed to find the end zone since Week 8.

12/26/2005

Ashley Lelie, den

Lelie needed 14 stitches to repair a gash on his arm sustained during last Saturday's 22-3 win over the Oakland Raiders. He is questionable for the Denver Broncos' regular season finale against the San Diego Chargers.

12/18/2005

Jason Elam, den

Elam made four extra points in Saturday's victory at Buffalo, making him the first player in NFL history with 100 points or more in each of his first 13 seasons. The Broncos' kicker has scored at least three points in every game this season.

Rod Smith, den

Smith caught 11 passes for 137 yards, both career highs, and scored a touchdown in Saturday's win at Buffalo. The Broncos' veteran receiver had 119 receiving yards in the first half, accounting for the majority of Denver's 210-yard total.

12/13/2005

Darrent Williams, den

Williams is expected to be sidelined for up to a month after straining his groin during the opening kickoff in Sunday's win over the Baltimore Ravens, according to Denver head coach Mike Shanahan. The Broncos likely will bring the rookie cornerback along slowly, in hopes of having him available for the upcoming playoffs.

12/12/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Picking off an errant Kyle Boller pass in the third quarter of Sunday's win over the Baltimore Ravens, Bailey recorded his fifth consecutive game with an interception, breaking the Broncos' franchise record formerly held by Tyrone Braxton (1996). Despite missing some time with a hamstring injury earlier this season, the cornerback has 49 tackles, one forced fumble and eight interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns in 11 games on the year.

12/4/2005

Tatum Bell, den

Bell was able to practice with the Denver Broncos all week, and he will be active and available for Sunday's meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs. The running back, who missed the team's last contest with a bruised chest, will serve as a backup to starting tailback Mike Anderson.

12/1/2005

Ron Dayne, den

Tatum Bell (chest) is slated to return to action after a one-week absence, but that doesn't mean Dayne won't get any playing time in Sunday's meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs. According to head coach Mike Shanahan, the veteran will be active and available, and he should figure into the backfield mix, although how much is yet to be determined. In Bell's stead, Dayne rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on seven carries last week against the Cowboys.

11/29/2005

Nate Webster, den

Webster has been activated from the physically unable to perform list by the Cincinnati Bengals and should be available for Sunday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The linebacker missed most of the 2004 season after suffering a torn patella tendon in his right knee in Week 3, and needed a second surgery on the knee last December. An additional procedure was necessary to repair a partial tear of the same tendon that occurred during rehab.

Tatum Bell, den

After missing the Broncos' Thanksgiving Day victory over the Dallas Cowboys with a bruised chest, Bell has returned to practice with the team this week. Barring any setbacks, he plans to be ready for Sunday's tussle with division rival Kansas City Chiefs. In 10 games this season, Bell has 640 yards and five touchdowns on 106 carries.

11/22/2005

Jason Elam, den

Elam did not miss any of his kick attempts in Sunday's win over the New York Jets -- including a 47-yard field goal -- despite playing with a strained left calf. The injury is not considered serious at this point, and the Broncos do not expect the kicker to miss any time. Elam is 16 of 22 this season, with all six of his misses coming from 40 yards or more.

Tatum Bell, den

Bell has been listed as questionable on the Broncos' injury report and likely will be a game-time decision for Thursday's matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, according to head coach Mike Shanahan. The running back was able to practice with the team on Tuesday despite bruising his chest in last weekend's win over the New York Jets.

11/21/2005

Tatum Bell, den

Bell was forced to leave Sunday's win over the New York Jets after suffering a bruised chest. The Broncos' running back, who had 34 yards on 10 carries prior to his departure, will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. For now, he has been listed as day-to-day.

11/17/2005

Ashley Lelie, den

All tests on Lelie's sore knee were negative, and he was able to work out at full speed with the Broncos on Wednesday. The receiver, who twisted the knee in last weekend's win over the Oakland Raiders, plans to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup with the New York Jets. Officially, he is listed as probable.

11/15/2005

Wesley Duke, den

The Denver Broncos have promoted Duke from their practice squad, filling the roster spot of safety Marques Anderson, who was waived on Tuesday. The rookie tight end, a former basketball standout at Mercer, has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL contest.

11/1/2005

Hamza Abdullah, den

Abdullah has signed with the Denver Broncos, filling the roster spot of cornerback Lenny Walls, who was placed on injured reserve with a strained groin on Tuesday. The safety had been on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad.

10/31/2005

Jake Plummer, den

Plummer extended his streak of games without a turnover to six, posting his best performance of the season in Sunday's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Broncos' quarterback went 22 of 35 for 309 yards and tied a career high with four touchdown passes. He has not been picked off since Week 2.

Tatum Bell, den

Bell logged 14 carries in Sunday's 49-21 beating of the Philadelphia Eagles, scampering for 107 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos' running back, who is averaging 7.0 yards per carry in eight games this season, continues to split playing time with starter Mike Anderson.

10/27/2005

Dwayne Carswell, den

Carswell tore his diaphragm, ruptured his spleen, suffered several broken ribs and had internal bleeding in his chest after he was involved in a five-car accident near Denver on Thursday. The Broncos' offensive lineman was still in surgery Thursday afternoon and was listed in critical but stable condition. Obviously, he will be sidelined indefinitely.

10/18/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey plans to work out with the Broncos this week -- at least on a limited basis -- and barring any setbacks, hopes to be in the lineup for Sunday's matchup with the New York Giants. Following a two-game absence, the cornerback returned to action this past Sunday, but was forced to leave after his hamstring began giving him problems early in the third quarter.

10/17/2005

Rod Smith, den

After notching just two catches last week against the Redskins, Smith got back on track in Sunday's victory over the New England Patriots, hauling in six passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. The Broncos' 35-year-old receiver has six or more receptions in four of six games this season.

Jake Plummer, den

Plummer posted a season-high 134.4 passer rating in Sunday's win over the New England Patriots, going 17 of 24 for 262 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos' quarterback does not have a turnover since Week 2, and he's thrown just three interceptions in six games on the year.

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey was back in the Broncos' lineup for Sunday's meeting with the New England Patriots after missing the team's previous two games with a strained left hamstring. However, the leg began giving him problems early in the third quarter, forcing him to miss the remainder of the contest. He had just two tackles prior to his departure.

Tatum Bell, den

Bell continues to impress, even though he remains as the top backup to starting tailback Mike Anderson in the Broncos' offensive attack. The second-year back topped the century mark for the second consecutive week, rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. He also added three catches for 20 yards.

10/14/2005

Champ Bailey, den

If Bailey is able to test out his leg at full speed on Friday and no problems are reported, he could return to the Broncos' lineup for this weekend's matchup with the New England Patriots. The cornerback has been sidelined since straining his hamstring in Week 3 and currently is listed as questionable on the Broncos' injury report. He's taken part in portions of the team's workouts this week, albeit on a very limited basis.

10/10/2005

Tatum Bell, den

Bell is making a case for more playing time with his performance in Sunday's victory over the Washington Redskins. The Broncos' running back, who has been serving as the primary backup to Mike Anderson this season, rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in the 21-19 win.

10/9/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey's strained hamstring improved enough for him to return to practice last week, albeit on a limited basis. However, not wanting to take any chances with the injury, the Denver Broncos decided to keep the cornerback on the sidelines for Sunday's meeting with the Washington Redskins. Bailey has missed two consecutive games after playing in 99 straight.

10/6/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey took part in portions of the Denver Broncos' practice on Wednesday and after the workout admitted that he should be ready for this weekend's game if his hamstring continues to improve over the next few days. The cornerback will test the leg by going full speed on Friday before making a decision on his availability for Sunday's meeting with the Washington Redskins, his former team.

10/4/2005

Darrent Williams, den

Barring any setbacks, Williams will return to practice with the Broncos on Wednesday after missing Sunday's meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars, due to a sprained ankle. The cornerback has recorded 12 tackles in three games this season.

10/3/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey's streak of consecutive games played has come to an end, as he was on the Broncos' inactive list for Sunday's meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The cornerback has been sidelined since straining his left hamstring last weekend. In three games this season, he has 13 tackles, one forced fumble and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

9/30/2005

Champ Bailey, den

After an MRI on Bailey's strained left hamstring revealed no major damage, the Broncos have stated that the cornerback will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against Jacksonville.

9/29/2005

Rod Smith, den

Smith is not battling any lingering effects from the minor concussion he suffered late in Monday night's win over the Kansas City Chiefs, and he's been practicing with the Denver Broncos over the past couple of days. The veteran receiver, who has 22 receptions for 253 yards and a touchdown in three games this season, plans to be in the starting lineup for this weekend's meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Damien Nash, den

After being on the Titans' inactive list the first three weeks of the 2005 campaign, Nash will be asked to step in and serve as Chris Brown's primary backup, beginning with this week's matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. The rookie running back will fill in for Travis Henry, who was suspended for four games earlier this week for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

9/28/2005

Champ Bailey, den

An MRI on Bailey's strained left hamstring has revealed no major damage. The Broncos' cornerback, who has not missed a game since joining the NFL in 1999, will continue to receive treatment on a daily basis, but likely won't practice with the team until later in the week, if at all. He was still limping noticeably on Tuesday.

Willie Middlebrooks, den

Middlebrooks has signed with the San Francisco 49ers, filling the roster spot of tight end Eric Johnson, who will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. The Niners acquired the cornerback from the Denver Broncos in a trade for defensive end John Engelberger this summer, but released him just prior to the start of the regular season.

9/27/2005

Rod Smith, den

In Monday night's victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, Smith hauled in seven passes for 80 yards and his first touchdown of the 2005 campaign. With the performance, the Broncos' wideout became the first undrafted player in NFL history to top 10,000 yards receiving for his career -- he now has 10,025 in 154 games. Smith suffered a concussion late in the game, but the ailment is considered minor.

Champ Bailey, den

Already nursing a sore shoulder, Bailey was unable to return to the Broncos' lineup after straining his left hamstring in the second quarter of Monday night's victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The cornerback is scheduled to be re-evaluated on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. At this point, he has been listed as day-to-day.

Tatum Bell, den

Bell made it through practice without any major problems last week and was available for Monday night's meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs, as anticipated. The running back, who had been battling a sprained ankle, served as a backup to starter Mike Anderson and finished with 47 yards on five carries.

9/23/2005

Tatum Bell, den

Bell was able to practice with the Denver Broncos on Thursday, albeit on a limited basis. According to head coach Mike Shanahan, the running back should be available for Monday night's matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, as long as his sprained ankle continues to show improvement. Bell currently is listed as questionable on the team's injury report.

9/22/2005

Tatum Bell, den

Bell has been unable to practice with the Denver Broncos this week, due to the ankle he sprained on a kickoff return in last weekend's win over the San Diego Chargers. The running back currently is listed as questionable for Monday night's tussle with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has 47 yards on 13 carries in two games this season.

9/21/2005

Paul Ernster, den

Ernster has been released by the Denver Broncos, opening a spot on the roster for the re-signing of running back Quentin Griffin, who inked with the team on Tuesday. The punter/kickoff specialist became expendable, due to Todd Sauerbrun's effectiveness on kickoffs in last week's action.

9/19/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Despite lingering soreness in the shoulder he dislocated the previous week, Bailey was in the Broncos' starting lineup for Sunday's meeting with the San Diego Chargers. The cornerback recorded just three tackles in the contest, but picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

Tatum Bell, den

Bell did not record a carry in Sunday's victory over the San Diego Chargers after suffering a sprained left ankle on a kickoff return. The Broncos' running back has been listed as day-to-day, but the injury is not considered serious.

9/17/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey practiced with the team again on Friday, and has had his status upgraded to probable for Sunday's game with the Chargers. He dislocated his shoulder in Denver's loss to the Dolphins last week. Bailey, who hasn't missed a game in his seven-year NFL career, said he expects to play.

9/15/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey was expected to wait until Friday to return to practice, but he worked out in pads with the Broncos on Thursday and seemed confident that he would be in the starting lineup for Sunday's meeting with the San Diego Chargers. The cornerback currently is listed as questionable on the team's injury report with a dislocated shoulder.

Courtney Brown, den

After missing more than a month with a dislocated left elbow, Brown has been practicing without incident this week, and he should make his Broncos debut in Sunday's meeting with the San Diego Chargers. The defensive end, who was the top overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, is listed as probable on the team's injury report.

9/13/2005

Landon Trusty, den

Trusty has been released by the San Diego Chargers, opening a spot on the roster for fellow tight end Antonio Gates, who returned to the team on Monday after serving a three-game suspension for missing the deadline to report to training camp.

9/12/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Originally diagnosed with a separated left shoulder, Bailey instead has a dislocated shoulder, an injury less severe. The Broncos' cornerback, who underwent further tests on Monday, suffered the injury while making a tackle early in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins. He will be re-evaluated later this week to determine if he'll be ready for the team's next contest. Bailey has not missed a regular season game since joining the league in 1999.

Javon Walker, den

Walker suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Lions and is out for the season. The injury occurred after Walker hauled in a 55-yard pass and was tackled at the Detroit three-yard line. However, the play was called back because of an offensive pass interference penalty on Walker. Before leaving the game, the Packers' wide receiver had four catches for 27 yards.

9/11/2005

Ron Dayne, den

Dayne will be inactive for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins. The Broncos' running back currently is listed third on the team's depth chart, but won't see any action in Week 1.

David Terrell, den

In a salary cap move, Terrell has been released by the Denver Broncos. The receiver is expected to re-sign with the club within the next week, but likely won't see much, if any, playing time until at least Week 3 of the NFL season. In 16 games with the Chicago Bears in 2004, he hauled in 42 passes for 699 yards and a touchdown.

9/8/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey's hamstring has improved, and he has been working out with the Denver Broncos on a daily basis. Due to the injury, the cornerback was limited through the majority of training camp as a precautionary measure, but he is slated to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

David Terrell, den

After being released by the New England Patriots over the weekend, Terrell has found a new home, signing a contract with the Denver Broncos. The receiver, who was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears, but failed to live up to his potential and was cut earlier this year. In 16 games in 2004, he hauled in 42 passes for 699 yards and a touchdown.

9/5/2005

Jerry Rice, den

Rice announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, two days after the Denver Broncos told him he made the team but was a fourth or fifth option at wide receiver. The 20-year veteran departs with the all-time records for receptions (1,549), receiving yards (22,895), receiving touchdowns (197) and overall touchdowns (208). Induction into the Football Hall of Fame in Akron will be his next big moment in the NFL spotlight.

9/4/2005

Jerry Rice, den

The Broncos informed Rice on Saturday that he made the team's 53-man roster for the 2005 season, but the veteran wideout will be no better than the team's fourth or fifth option at wide receiver. Rice reportedly is taking a couple of days to decide whether he wants to remain at the end of the bench or retire. In 20 NFL seasons, Rice has amassed 1,549 catches for 22,895 yards and 197 receiving touchdowns.

9/3/2005

David Terrell, den

Acquired by the Patriots as a free agent this offseason, Terrell was among the players cut by New England on Saturday. Terrell had 42 receptions with Chicago in 2004, leading the club with 699 receiving yards.

8/31/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Although he won't play in Friday's preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals, Bailey has returned to practice with the Denver Broncos and fully expects to be in the starting lineup when the regular season kicks off next weekend. As a precautionary measure, the cornerback has been limited most of the month, due to a nagging hamstring injury.

8/30/2005

Courtney Brown, den

As the Denver Broncos had hoped, Brown returned to practice with the team on Monday after missing more than three weeks with a dislocated left elbow. If no problems are reported over the next couple of days, the defensive end, who was the top overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, should see some action in Friday's preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

8/29/2005

Raylee Johnson, den

After spending just one season in Denver, Johnson has been released by the Broncos. The 35-year-old defensive end appeared in 14 games in 2004, notching 12 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

Luther Elliss, den

Elliss has been released by the Denver Broncos. The defensive tackle played in just eight games for the Broncos last season and finished the year on injured reserve with a herniated disc in his back. Ellis has logged 10 seasons in the NFL, the first nine of those with Detroit.

Danny Kanell, den

Kanell has been released by the Denver Broncos after losing the competition for the No. 2 quarterback job to Bradlee Van Pelt. The Broncos will go into the season with Jake Plummer as their top signal caller, while Matt Mauck will handle the third-string duties.

Nate Webster, den

Webster will not be eligible to return to the Bengals' lineup until at least the seventh game of the season after being placed on the physically unable to perform list. The linebacker missed most of the 2004 season after suffering a torn patella tendon in his right knee in Week 3, and needed a second surgery on the knee in December. An additional procedure was necessary to repair a partial tear of the same tendon that occurred during rehab.

Cedric Cobbs, den

Cobbs has been waived by the New England Patriots. As a rookie last season, the running back appeared in three games, rushing for 50 yards on 22 carries, fumbling once. He was a fourth-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Maurice Clarett, den

Clarett is expected to be released by the Denver Broncos within the next few days, according to his agent. The rookie running back, who was a third-round pick in this year's draft, has missed the majority of training camp with a nagging groin injury.

Micah Knorr, den

Punter Micah Knorr was cut by the New York Jets on Saturday. The Jets have stated that they will give the punting job to Australian Ben Graham, despite his unique punting style, which has led to three botched punts in two preseason games.

Javon Walker will have precautionary X-rays taken after dislocating a finger during Friday night's preseason game against the Patriots.

8/25/2005

The Denver Broncos fully expect Bailey to be available for their Week 1 battle with the Miami Dolphins, but they aren't going to take any chances with his nagging hamstring injury and have decided to hold the cornerback out of the team's final two preseason contests.

8/24/2005

David Terrell, den

Terrell had missed some time recently with an undisclosed injury, but he was back at practice with the New England Patriots on Tuesday. The receiver has yet to make his Patriots game debut after signing a one-year contract during the offseason, but he should see some time in Friday's matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

8/19/2005

Maurice Clarett, den

Clarett returned to practice with the Denver Broncos on Thursday and worked out without any major problems, according to head coach Mike Shanahan. However, the rookie running back already has been ruled out of Saturday's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers after missing nearly two weeks with a nagging groin injury.

8/18/2005

Champ Bailey, den

The Broncos are not taking any chances with Bailey, who continues to battle tightness in his hamstring. The cornerback has been limited in practice this week, and if the problem lingers over the next couple of days, he'll likely be held out of Saturday's exhibition meeting with the San Francisco 49ers.

8/16/2005

Jerry Rice, den

The Denver Broncos have moved Rice up on their depth chart, bumping him to No. 3, ahead of struggling second-year wideout Darius Watts. The veteran receiver saw limited action in an exhibition game against the Houston Texans over the weekend after missing some practice time last week with a sore foot. He plans to work out more regularly over the next several days and be ready for Saturday's preseason batting with the San Francisco 49ers.

8/11/2005

Champ Bailey, den

Bailey has been limited this week after aggravating a hamstring injury during the Broncos' workouts on Monday. Although the ailment is not considered serious, the team is not going to take any chances with their star cornerback and likely will hold him out of Saturday's exhibition game against the Houston Texans.

Maurice Clarett, den

An MRI on Clarett's ailing groin has revealed no major damage, and he could return to practice as early as next week. The rookie running back, who did not travel with the Broncos for their first exhibition game this weekend, will receive treatment and be evaluated on a daily basis.

Clarett will remain in Denver to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the groin injury that has sidelined him for most of training camp. The rookie running back also is nursing some tightness in his hamstring.

8/9/2005

Tatum Bell, den

Bell is considered the Broncos' tailback of the future, but he might not be in the starting role to begin the 2005 campaign. The team released their first depth chart on Monday, and Mike Anderson currently holds the top spot in the backfield, with Bell lined up at No. 2. In 14 games last season -- his first in the NFL -- Bell rushed 75 times for 396 yards and three touchdowns.

8/8/2005

Javon Walker, den

Walker felt something pull in his hamstring while running during the Packers' practice Sunday night and was forced to miss the rest of the workout. The receiver, who had his leg heavily wrapped in ice, said he didn't think the injury was serious, and the move to come out was a precautionary measure. He'll be re-evaluated on Monday.

8/6/2005

Jake Plummer, den

Plummer tweaked his left knee during training camp on Saturday. The quarterback's injury is not considered serious, and he returned to the practice field later in the day.

Mario Fatafehi, den

Fatafehi injured his left knee during training camp on Saturday. The early prognosis is that the defensive lineman will miss one to three weeks.

8/4/2005

7/31/2005

Jerry Rice, den

Rice sat out the afternoon session of Friday's practice, along with the morning session of Saturday's practice with a tight hamstring. Rice returned to the field on Saturday afternoon for a light workout.

7/29/2005

Maurice Clarett, den

Clarett signed an incentive-laden, four-year deal with Denver on Thursday that has a maximum value of $7 million if he meets several performance escalators. The third of three third-round draft choices this year for the Broncos, Clarett decided to forgo any guaranteed money for the chance of being paid like a first-rounder should he end up playing like one. The former Ohio State star rushed for 1,237 yards and 16 TDs in 2002, his only season in the collegiate ranks.

7/28/2005

Javon Walker, den

After his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, indicated all offseason that he wouldn't report for training camp unless he got a new contract, Walker joined the Green Bay Packers late Wednesday. The receiver still has two years remaining on his current deal and is slated to earn about $515,000 this season. Reportedly, Rosenhaus continues to negotiate with the club on a possible new deal.

Darrent Williams, den

Williams has signed with the Denver Broncos, agreeing to a four-year contract that includes a $1.3 million signing bonus, according to his agent. The second-round pick out of Oklahoma State is expected to begin the 2005 campaign as a backup cornerback, but could step into the role as the team's top kickoff and punt returner as well.

7/27/2005

Khaleed Vaughn, den

Vaughn was injured during training-camp practice on Tuesday and had to be carted from the field. The exact nature and extent of the injury have not been released by the team. Vaughn, a defensive end who played the first three games of his NFL career last season, was expected to work with the first-team defense in camp and perhaps start the first few games of the regular season while usual starter Brady Smith recovers from neck surgery.

7/23/2005

According to agent Drew Rosenhaus, Walker will not join the Green Bay Packers for training camp unless he gets a new contract. Reportedly, the Packers do not plan to budge.

7/15/2005

John Engelberger, den

The Denver Broncos acquired Engelberger on Friday in a trade that shipped cornerback Willie Middlebrooks to the San Francisco 49ers. Engelberger, a second-round draft pick in 2000, led the 49ers with six sacks last season, but is thought to be too small to play defensive end in San Francisco's new 3-4 defensive scheme under new head coach Mike Nolan. Free agent Marques Douglas was signed in April to take Engelberger's starting job.

Willie Middlebrooks, den

The San Francisco 49ers acquired Middlebrooks from the Denver Broncos on Friday in a trade for defensive end John Engelberger. The cornerback, who was the Broncos' first-round selection in 2001, was a disappointment in Denver, never earning a regular starting job in four seasons. He will join Ahmed Plummer and Shawntae Spencer in the 49ers' improved defensive secondary.

5/25/2005

Jerry Rice, den

Rice has agreed to a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos. The veteran wideout, who will turn 43 in October, began the 2004 campaign with the Oakland Raiders, but saw limited action and was later traded to the Seattle Seahawks. He finished the season with 30 catches for 429 yards and three touchdowns between the two clubs. Rice is the NFL's all-time leader in receptions, total yards, receiving touchdowns and total touchdowns.

P.J. Alexander, den

Alexander tore the ACL in his right knee at the Broncos' recent passing camp and will miss the 2005 season. The guard was expected to compete for a starting job on the right side of the Denver offensive line. He played in five games as an undrafted free agent last year, but did not make a start.

5/19/2005

Todd Sauerbrun, den

The Carolina Panthers have traded Sauerbrun to the Denver Broncos in exchange for punter Jason Baker and a seventh-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. The three-time Pro Bowl selection, who spent the last four seasons with the Panthers, has averaged 44.0 yards on 760 punts in 146 career games.

5/14/2005

Todd Sauerbrun, den

A trade that could send Sauerbrun to the Denver Broncos is on hold while the Broncos decide whether they would be open to restructuring the punter's contract. Carolina and Denver have agreed on the terms of the deal, which would send a 7th round pick to the Panthers, but Sauerbrun wants to make sure he gets a long-term commitment from the Broncos.

5/11/2005

John Lynch, den

The league ruled to uphold the $75,000 fine it levied against Lynch for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts tight end Dallas Clark in the final game of the 2004 regular season. Lynch had appealed the fine and stated his case on April 13, but the NFL decided that the punishment would stand.

The defensive end, who will be entering his 14th NFL season, considered retirement last summer, but wound up starting all 16 games for the Broncos, finishing the campaign with 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
