4/24/2006
Ricky Manning Jr., chi
Manning Jr. was arrested on suspicion of assault Sunday after a fight at a restaurant near the UCLA campus. Manning, a 25-year-old restricted free agent who signed an offer sheet with Chicago on Friday after three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, was arrested after he allegedly hit a man in the face at a Denny's restaurant. Manning was released after posting $30,000 bail.
4/22/2006
Ricky Manning Jr., chi
Manning, a restricted free-agent defensive back, signed with the Bears on Friday, in a deal reportedly worth up to $21 million over five years. The deal includes about $7.5 million in guaranteed money in the first year of the contract. Manning spent his first three seasons with the Panthers, and Carolina has until April 28 to match the offer or receive a third-round draft pick from the Bears.
3/31/2006
Tank Johnson, chi
Johnson is recovering Friday from surgery to repair a torn quadriceps muscle, an injury that could sideline him for at least four months.
3/21/2006
Brian Griese, chi
Griese agreed to a five-year contract with Chicago on Tuesday and plans to compete with Rex Grossman for the Bears' starting quarterback position. The 31-year-old went 5-1 for Tampa Bay last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The Buccaneers chose to waive him rather than pay a $2.6 million roster bonus.
2/25/2006
John St. Clair, chi
St. Clair signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Bears on Friday. The offensive lineman played in 13 games and started twice for the Bears last season.
1/17/2006

Attempting to break up a pass in the fourth quarter of Sunday's playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers, Muhammad suffered a broken bone in his right hand. Despite the injury, the receiver was able to remain in the Bears' lineup and finish the game. He ended up with three catches for 58 yards on the day.
1/16/2006
Mike Brown, chi
Brown aggravated his strained calf muscle late in the second quarter of Sunday's playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers and was unable to return to the Bears' lineup. The same injury forced the safety to miss the last four games of the regular season.
Bernard Berrian, chi
Berrian hauled in a career-high five passes in Sunday's playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers, leading the Bears in receiving with 68 yards. However, the wideout spent a good portion of the second half on the sidelines with his bruised hip wrapped in a large ice pack. He was unable to return to the game after suffering the injury.
1/11/2006
Jamaal Green, chi
Green has signed with the Chicago Bears, filling the roster spot of safety Brandon McGowan, who was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. The defensive end, a fourth-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, has appeared in eight games -- all coming with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004 -- notching two tackles and one sack.
Brandon McGowan, chi
McGowan will miss the rest of the playoffs after being placed on injured reserve by the Chicago Bears on Tuesday. The safety, who is nursing a knee injury, finished the regular season with 31 tackles and one pass defended in eight games. Defensive end Jamaal Green was signed to fill the void on the roster.
1/10/2006
Mike Brown, chi
Sidelined since straining a calf muscle prior to a Dec. 11 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Brown has been practicing at full speed with the Bears recently, and he does not expect to be limited in Sunday's playoff tussle with the Carolina Panthers. The safety will be in the starting lineup.

1/1/2006
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones has been added to the Chicago Bears' injury list because of a hip injury. He is listed as probable, but it seems his chances of playing against Minnesota Sunday have dropped dramatically. He already wasn't expected to play much because the Bears have a playoff spot secured. Now risking a more serious injury might keep him from taking the field at all.
Rex Grossman, chi
The FOX affiliate in Chicago is reporting that Grossman will not start against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday. The Bears' quarterback will be on the bench for the season finale with a playoff spot sown up. Instead, the Bears will go with rookie Kyle Orton.
Cedric Benson, chi
After missing six weeks of action because of a sprained right ankle, Benson practiced with the Chicago Bears all week this week. If his ankle holds up, the fourth-overall pick in last summer's draft could see plenty of action with a playoff spot secured. Benson hasn't carried the ball more than 16 times in a game during his rookie year. His 79 yards at New Orleans on Nov. 6 are his highest total. He hasn't found the end zone while running for 237 yards in eight games.
Kyle Orton, chi
The FOX affiliate in Chicago is reporting that Orton will quarterback the Chicago Bears against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. With a playoff spot secured, the Bears will not start Rex Grossman. Orton is 10-4 in 14 games this season, though with just nine touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and a 59.9 passer rating.
12/31/2005
Adewale Ogunleye, chi
A slight hamstring pull could keep Ogunleye off the field this weekend. The Bears' defensive end suffered the injury during practice Thursday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Minnesota. Ogunleye leads the Bears with 10 sacks this season and has forced one fumble.
Rex Grossman, chi
There is a good chance Grossman may not start in Chicago's game Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, reports the Chicago Sun Times. Despite a great start last weekend, the Bears' quarterback might take a back seat to No. 2 Kyle Orton in order to assure a healthy start for the playoffs. Bears coach Lovie Smith said he will not announce Chicago's starter until kick off, although he had Orton receiving a good portion of snaps in Friday's practice.
12/30/2005
Adrian Peterson, chi
With a playoff spot wrapped up, the Chicago Bears plan to limit starter Thomas Jones' carries in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. Since rookie Cedric Benson has yet to fully recover from a knee injury, the team will turn to Peterson to handle the bulk of the rushing load this weekend.
12/29/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones is scheduled to start in the Bears' regular season finale against the Vikings, but is not expected to play much of the game. Jones needs 27 yards to join Walter Payton as the only two Bears running backs to gain 1,300 yards in a single season. Jones is expected to get some rest after reaching the milestone.
12/27/2005
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson will continue to expand his involvement at practice this week, and barring any setbacks, he will be available for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, according to Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner. The rookie running back has been sidelined since Week 10 with a sprained right knee. In eight contests this season, he has 237 yards on 58 carries, but has yet to find the end zone.
12/24/2005
Olin Kreutz, chi
Kreutz has been upgraded from questionable to probable for Sunday's game against the Packers. The center has been bothered by a sore back.
Jerry Azumah, chi
Azumah missed Friday's practice with a pulled hamstring and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers. If he can't go, Rashied Davis or Bernard Berrian would become the primary kick returner while Mike Green would take Azumah's spot as the nickel back.
Mike Brown, chi
Brown practiced for the first time all week on Friday and says he will be able to go when the Bears take on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The safety, who remains listed as questionable on the injury report, has been sidelined since straining a calf muscle prior to the dec. 11 game against the Steelers.
12/22/2005
Muhsin Muhammad, chi
As expected, Muhammad was back on the practice field Thursday, taking part in the Bears' entire workout. Nursing a sore back, the receiver was held out on Wednesday as a precationary measure and originally was listed as probable for Sunday's meeting with the Green Bay Packers. Following practice, the Bears removed Muhammad from the injury report.
12/21/2005
Muhsin Muhammad, chi
Muhammad was held out of Wednesday's practice as a precautionary measure, allowing him to rest his sore back. The receiver, who is listed as probable on the Bears' injury report this week, plans to return to the field within the next day or two and be ready for Sunday's tussle with the Green Bay Packers.
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson was able to participate in portions of the Chicago Bears' practice on Wednesday, but he still remains listed as questionable on the team's injury report. The rookie running back, who has been sidelined since Week 10 with a sprained right knee, likely will be a game-time decision for Sunday's battle with the Green Bay Packers. In eight contests this season, he has 237 yards on 58 carries, but has yet to find the end zone.
12/19/2005
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman will make his seventh NFL start when the Bears play at Green Bay Sunday. The Bears' quarterback played in his first regular-season game since Sept. 26, 2004, when he replaced Bears' starter Kyle Orton in the third quarter of Sunday's 16-3 win over the Falcons. Grossman was 9 of 16 passing for 93 yards and an interception.
Kyle Orton, chi
Orton will be replaced by Rex Grossman in the starting lineup Sunday when the Bears play the Packers. After completing just 2 of 10 passes for 12 yards in the first half of Sunday's 16-3 win over the Falcons, Orton was pulled in place of Grossman.
12/15/2005
Mike Brown, chi
Brown continues to be hobbled by a strained calf muscle, and barring a quick recovery over the next couple of days, he won't be in the lineup for Sunday night's battle with the Atlanta Falcons. The Bears' starting safety was limited to individual work during the team's practice on Thursday and currently is listed as doubtful on the injury report.
12/12/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones recorded just 14 carries in Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he rushed for 72 yards and scored his first touchdown since Week 6. The Bears' running back also hauled in four passes for 23 yards in the contest.
Mike Brown, chi
The strained calf muscle that limited Brown in practice last week prevented him from taking the field in Sunday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The safety, who had been listed as questionable going into the game, was replaced in the Bears' lineup by Todd Johnson.
Kyle Orton, chi
Orton completed just 17 of his 35 pass attempts and failed to lead the Chicago Bears on a touchdown drive in Sunday's 21-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the rookie quarterback did not throw an interception and passed for 207 yards, the second-best yardage total of his young NFL career.
12/9/2005
Fred Miller, chi
Miller and Olin Kreutz were fined $50,000 each by the NFL on Friday for their Nov. 7 altercation at a FBI shooting range. The fight, which resulted in a broken jaw for Miller, was ruled to violate the league's special conduct policy on off-the-field actions.
Olin Kreutz, chi
The NFL fined Kreutz and fellow offensive lineman Fred Miller $50,000 each for their Nov. 7 altercation at a FBI shooting range. Miller suffered a broken jaw in the fight with Kreutz, which the NFL ruled violated its special conduct policy regarding off-the-field actions.
12/8/2005
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman reportedly took about 20 percent of the snaps with the Bears' first-team offense on Wednesday and reported no problems with his leg. As a result, the quarterback, who has been sidelined since dislocating and fracturing his left ankle in the team's first preseason game, has been promoted to No. 2 on the depth chart and will serve as rookie Kyle Orton's primary backup in Sunday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Veteran Jeff Blake drops to third-string.
12/6/2005
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman continues to expand his involvement in the Bears' practices, and barring any setbacks, he's expected to move up the depth chart and take over as the primary backup to Kyle Orton as early as this week. The quarterback, who has been sidelined since dislocating and fracturing his left ankle in the team's first preseason game, has served as the No. 3 emergency QB the past couple of weeks.
12/5/2005
Muhsin Muhammad, chi
Including the postseason, Muhammad did not have a catch for the first time in 51 games, failing to haul in a pass in Sunday's win over the Green Bay Packers. The Bears did not need to utilize the pass very often in the contest, as quarterback Kyle Orton finished with just six completed passes for 68 yards on the day.
12/4/2005
Nathan Vasher, chi
Vasher returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the Bears win over the Packers. It was Vasher's first interception return for a touchdown on the season.
12/1/2005
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson is still at least a couple weeks away from returning to the Bears' backfield, but his sprained right knee has improved enough for him to resume straight-forward light running, but he has yet to attempt any cuts. The rookie running back, who has been sidelined since Week 10, will continue to receive treatment on a daily basis. In eight games this season, Benson has 237 yards on 58 carries.
11/30/2005
Lennie Friedman, chi
Friedman has signed with the Chicago Bears, filling the roster spot of rookie receiver Airese Currie, who will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. The veteran offensive lineman has appeared in 63 games during his six-year NFL career, including 32 starts.
Airese Currie, chi
Currie, who has been on the non-football injury list all season with a foot ailment, was placed on injured reserve by the Chicago Bears on Tuesday. The rookie receiver, a fifth-round pick in this year's draft, will be replaced on the roster by offensive lineman Lennie Friedman.
11/23/2005

Chicago's defense sacked Carolina's Delhomme eight times in their 13-3 win on Sunday, as Ogunleye led the way with three.
Rex Grossman, chi
The Bears' projected starting quarterback for the 2005 season will dress for the first time since the third game of the 2004 season. Grossman will dress as an emergency third quarterback behind Kyle Orton and Jeff Blake.
Nathan Vasher, chi
A week after recording the longest play in NFL history, Vasher was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after the Bears 13-3 win over Carolina on Sunday. The Bears cornerback intercepted two passes, forced a fumble and made four tackles in the Bears sixth straight win.
11/21/2005

11/18/2005
Fred Miller, chi
Miller has been practicing with the Bears all week, prompting the team to upgrade him from questionable to probable on the injury report. The offensive lineman has been recovering since undergoing minor surgery to repair his broken jaw, an injury suffered in an off-day brawl with teammate Olin Kreutz. The Bears originally indicated Miller got hurt when he fell at his home.
Rex Grossman, chi
If Grossman continues to show progress, he is expected to practice at full speed with the Chicago Bears as early as next week. The quarterback, who has been sidelined since dislocating and fracturing his left ankle in the team's first preseason game, was able to work out with the Bears' scout team on Thursday and reported no major problems.
11/17/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones practiced without limitations on Wednesday, and he plans to return to the Bears' starting lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Carolina Panthers after missing the team's last game with bruised ribs. The running back is not listed on this week's injury report, and he's expected to handle the majority of the carries this weekend.
11/15/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
According to head coach Lovie Smith, the Bears are confident that Jones will return to the backfield for Sunday's meeting with the Carolina Panthers. The running back, who missed last weekend's victory over the San Francisco 49ers with bruised ribs, is expected to practice as early as Wednesday, but likely will be limited to non-contact drills as a precautionary measure, at least early in the week. In eight games, Jones has 753 yards on 167 carries and six touchdowns.
11/14/2005
Adrian Peterson, chi
With regular starter Thomas Jones inactive with bruised ribs and top backup Cedric Benson going down with a knee injury, Peterson was forced to step up and fill the void in the Bears' backfield in Sunday's matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. The running back had no problems answering the call, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.
Nathan Vasher, chi
In the closing moments of the first half of Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers, Vasher picked up a missed 52-yard field goal in the end zone and returned it 108 yards for a touchdown, recording the longest play in NFL history. The previous high was 107 yards by Baltimore's Chris McAlister in 2002.
Cedric Benson, chi
An MRI on Benson's injured right knee has confirmed the original diagnosis of a sprained medial collateral ligament. The Bears rookie running back, who went down in the second quarter of Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to be sidelined for the next 3-6 weeks. In eight games this season, Benson has 237 yards on 58 carries.
11/13/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones will not play today when the Bears face the San Francisco 49ers.
Cedric Benson, chi
Thomas Jones, shelved with bruised ribs, will not play today, so Benson will get his first NFL start when the Bears host the San Francisco 49ers.
11/12/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones will be a game-time decision for Sunday's contest against the 49ers. Jones' bruised ribs, aggravated during last week's win over New Orleans, have improved over the course of the week, so Lovie Smith has yet to rule the running back out.
11/9/2005
Fred Miller, chi
Miller was forced to undergo surgery to repair damage to his jaw after falling in his home earlier this week. According to Bears head coach Lovie Smith, the starting right tackle will be sidelined for at least the next two weeks.
Marc Edwards, chi
Edwards has been released by the Chicago Bears, opening a spot on the roster for Jason McKie, who was activated from the non-football injury list on Tuesday. In eight games this season, including five starts, the veteran fullback did not record a carry, but he hauled in 10 passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones was forced out of last weekend's victory over the New Orleans Saints after aggravating his bruised ribs, and he has been listed as questionable for this Sunday's meeting with the San Francisco 49ers. The running back did not practice with the Bears on Wednesday, and a final decision on his availability likely won't be made until just before game time, according to head coach Lovie Smith.
Jason McKie, chi
McKie has been activated from the non-football injury list by the Chicago Bears, filling the roster spot of fellow fullback Marc Edwards, who was released on Tuesday. A four-year veteran, McKie tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights over the summer and has been sidelined since.
Cedric Benson, chi
With Thomas Jones leaving early after aggravating his bruised ribs, Benson got some extra work in Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints and turned in the best outing of his NFL career. The Bears' rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, picked up 79 yards on 14 carries.
11/7/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones was forced to leave Sunday's game against the Saints in the second quarter with bruised ribs and did not return. He finished the game with 11 rushes for 40 yards and one catch for minus six yards. Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson split carries in the second half in place of Jones. He will be re-evaluated over the coming days to determine his status and availability.
11/2/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
In an effort to give his bruised ribs and sore knee some time to heal, the Bears kept Jones out of practice on Wednesday. There is a chance that the running back could be limited over the next day or two as well, but he has vowed to be in the lineup for Sunday's meeting with the New Orleans Saints. The Bears have listed him as probable on the injury report.
11/1/2005
Justin Gage, chi
After losing his starting spot earlier this season, Gage will return to the No. 2 hole on the Chicago Bears' depth chart, replacing rookie Mark Bradley, who will miss the rest of the campaign with a torn knee ligament. Beginning with Sunday's tussle with the New Orleans Saints, Gage will line up opposite top receiver Muhsin Muhammad.
10/31/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones was limited in the fourth quarter and didn't see any action in overtime of Sunday's win over the Detroit Lions after taking a hit to his left side. The Bears' running back underwent precautionary tests, which revealed no major damage. He has been listed as day-to-day with bruised ribs. Adrian Peterson and Cedric Benson filled the void in the backfield following Jones' departure.
Mark Bradley, chi
Tests have revealed that Bradley has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury suffered late in the first half of Sunday's overtime victory over the Detroit Lions. The Bears' receiver, who had five catches for a team-high 88 yards prior to his departure, will undergo surgery in the near future and miss the rest of the 2005 campaign.
10/29/2005
Mark Bradley, chi
The Bears have removed wide receiver Mark Bradley from their injury report, stating that the rookie will be ready to play on Sunday. Bradley had been listed as probable due to a knee injury, but will now likely start this weekend against the Lions. Bradley has 13 receptions for 142 yards through six games.
10/27/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Giving Jones a chance to rest his troublesome right knee, the Chicago Bears held the running back out of practice on Wednesday, but fully expect him to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Detroit Lions. Jones slightly sprained the knee nearly three weeks ago, but has played through the pain and continued to handle the majority of the team's carries.
Bernard Berrian, chi
Tests have revealed that Berrian has torn ligaments in his left thumb, and he will be forced to undergo surgery to correct the problem. The Bears' receiver, who suffered the injury in last weekend's win over the Baltimore Ravens, is expected to be sidelined for the next 6-8 weeks.
10/24/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones topped the 100-yard mark for the fourth time in his last five games, leading the Bears to a 10-6 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The running back, who had been listed as probable on the injury report going into the contest, matched a season high with 139 yards on 25 carries.
10/21/2005
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman, who continues to recover from a broken left ankle, currently is targeting a November 27 meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as his likely return date. The quarterback hopes to begin running next week, and if no problems are reported, he could resume practicing in early November.
10/20/2005
Thomas Jones, chi

Officially, he is listed as probable.
10/19/2005

Griese has been diagnosed with a sprained left knee, but will undergo more tests over the next couple of days to determine exactly how serious the injury is. The veteran quarterback went down in the second quarter of Sunday's matchup with the Miami Dolphins and was unable to return to the Buccaneers' lineup. He was replaced under center by backup Chris Simms.
Desmond Clark, chi
Because of an illness, Clark was unable to do much at practice with the Bears last week, but he was in the lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The tight hauled in just four passes for 19 yards, but two resulted in touchdowns -- his first of the season.
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones did not appear to be hobbled by the sprained right knee that limited his work in practice last week, rushing for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in Sunday's 28-3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The running back had been listed as questionable going into the game, but was in the Bears' starting lineup and saw the majority of the work out of the backfield.
10/16/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
FOX and ESPN are reporting that Jones will play after all on Sunday, when the Chicago Bears host the Minnesota Vikings. Jones was at practice on Friday, but with a noticeable limp that made his availability for Sunday appear doubtful.
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson's first career start appears to be on hold, as both FOX and ESPN are reporting that Jones will start against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Bears' rookie still may get more carries than he has seen in his first three games, as Jones was walking around practice with a noticeable limp on Friday. Benson has 24 carries, 65 yards and a 2.7 yards-per-carry average in his first three NFL contests.
10/15/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Although Jones attended the Bears' practice on Friday, his sprained right knee was heavily taped, and the running back was noticeably limping. Sources say that Jones will likely not play on Sunday, when Chicago takes on Minnesota, but as of now he is listed as questionable.
10/13/2005
Doug Brien, chi
Brien's early season struggles on the field, as well as his recent battle with back spasms, have resulted in him being released by the Chicago Bears. The veteran kicker, who hit just one of his four field-goal attempts prior to missing last week's game with injury, will be replaced by Robbie Gould.
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones did not practice with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday, but he was able to jog lightly on the side and did not report any problems with his injured knee. The running back is nursing a strained lateral collateral ligament in the knee, but has yet to be officially ruled out of Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. Currently, he is listed as questionable on the team's injury report.
Robbie Gould, chi
Gould will take over as the Bears' kicker going forward, as the team decided to cut ties with veteran Doug Brien on Wednesday. Brien was released after hitting just one of his four field-goal attempts this season before missing last weekend's game with back spasms.
10/11/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews this week after an MRI on his injured right knee revealed damage to the lateral collateral ligament. The Bears' running back, who went down late in Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns, likely will miss at least this weekend's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. In four games this season, Jones has rushed for 413 yards and four touchdowns on 86 carries.
Cedric Benson, chi
Tests on Thomas Jones' right knee have revealed ligament damage, and he'll likely be forced to miss at least Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. If that is the case, Benson will step into the Bears' starting lineup, according to head coach Lovie Smith. The rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, has had a tough time getting into the offensive mix so far this season, due to the solid play of Jones.
10/10/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones rushed for 137 yards on 24 carries in Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns, but was forced to leave in the fourth quarter after banging his right knee. The Bears' running back will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, but he indicated that it was nothing severe. Jones plans to be ready for next weekend's division battle with the Vikings. He has topped the century mark in each of his last three games and has four touchdowns on the year.
10/9/2005
Doug Brien, chi
Brien was downgraded to questionable on the Bears' injury report late in the week and now has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns, due to back spasms. In his absence, Robbie Gould, who signed with the team on Saturday, will handle the kicking duties this weekend.

The Chicago Bears placed Odom on injured reserve Saturday. The linebacker injured his ankle during the Bears' September 18 game against the Detroit Lions. Chicago filled the roster spot by signing free-agent placekicker Robbie Gould.
10/7/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
While rookie and No. 4 overall pick Cedric Benson has stressed that he is up to speed on the Bears' offensive playbook, the team has no plans to make any backfield changes at this point. According to head coach Lovie Smith, Jones will continue to get the majority of the carries for the foreseeable future.
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson continues to work his way into the Bears' offensive mix slowly, but don't expect him to take over as the starting tailback any time soon. According to head coach Lovie Smith, Thomas Jones will continue to get the majority of the touches out of the backfield, with the rookie and No. 4 overall pick seeing spot carries as the primary backup. Benson has rushed just 19 times this season, picking up 59 yards.
10/5/2005
Desmond Clark, chi
As a precautionary measure, Clark has been held out of practice since straining his neck in the Bears' Week 3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. However, the tight end plans to work out with the team later this week and be ready for Sunday's meeting with the Cleveland Browns. The Bears had a bye last week, giving Clark some extra time to recover from the injury.
10/4/2005
Justin Gage, chi
Gage has lost his spot in the Chicago Bears' starting lineup, according to head coach Lovie Smith. The receiver, who has just two catches for 31 yards in three games this season, will be replaced by rookie Mark Bradley.
Mark Bradley, chi
According to head coach Lovie Smith, Bradley will step into the Bears' starting lineup, beginning with this weekend's matchup with the Cleveland Browns. The rookie receiver, who was a second-round pick in this year's draft, will start opposite Muhsin Muhammad, replacing the struggling Justin Gage.
10/3/2005
Brian Griese, chi
After averaging just 162.7 yards passing over his first three games of the 2005 campaign, Griese aired it out in the Buccaneers' victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, finishing with 302 yards and two touchdowns. However, his day was not perfect, as he threw three interceptions, was sacked three times and lost a fumble. His 66.4 passer rating was his lowest of the season.
9/26/2005
Desmond Clark, chi
Clark was knocked out of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals after straining his neck in the first half. Following the contest, the Bears' tight end said the injury is minor, and he plans to be ready for the team's next battle. Chicago has a bye in Week 4.
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones picked up 106 yards and scored a touchdown on 27 carries in Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Dating back to last season, the Bears' running back has topped the 100-yard mark in four of his last five games, including two straight.
Adewale Ogunleye, chi
Despite missing most of last week's practices with a sprained ankle, Ogunleye was in the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bears' defensive end had been listed as questionable going into the contest, but ended up notching four tackles and a sack.
Cedric Benson, chi
Not only did Benson fail to record a carry, but he didn't make it on to the field at all in Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The rookie running back has been battling for playing time in the Bears' offensive attack, but the solid play of veteran Thomas Jones has limited his action. Jones has topped 100 yards rushing in each of his last two games.
Kyle Orton, chi
Orton definitely looked like a rookie in Sunday's 24-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing a career-high five interceptions. The Bears' quarterback finished with a 14.7 passer rating, going 17 of 39 for 149 yards and no touchdowns. He'll have some extra time to bounce back from the dismal performance, as the Bears have a bye in Week 4.
9/22/2005
Adewale Ogunleye, chi
Tests on Ogunleye's sprained ankle were negative, but he continues to be hobbled by the injury. The Bears' defensive end has been unable to practice with the team this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday's meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. According to head coach Lovie Smith, Ogunleye likely will be a game-time decision.
9/21/2005
Alex Bannister, chi
Expected to miss at least a couple of months after breaking his right collarbone for the third time in less than a year, Bannister has been placed on injured reserve by the Seattle Seahawks, officially ending his 2005 campaign. The receiver's most recent injury occurred in Sunday's win over the Atlanta Falcons.
9/20/2005
Alex Bannister, chi
Further tests have revealed that Bannister has a crack in his right collarbone, the third time in the last year that he has suffered the same injury. The Seahawks' receiver, who went down in Sunday's win over the Atlanta Falcons, is expected to be sidelined for at least a couple of months.
9/19/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Jones is doing all he can to hold off first-round pick (fourth overall) Cedric Benson and keep the Bears' starting tailback job. The sixth-year running back helped lead Chicago to a 38-6 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, picking up 139 yards and scoring two touchdowns on 20 carries. He also hauled in two passes for 19 yards.
Alex Bannister, chi
Bannister was unable to return to the Seahawks lineup after injuring his right collarbone in Sunday's win over the Atlanta Falcons. The receiver broke the same bone last season and missed the final nine games of the 2004 campaign, then suffered another fracture during a minicamp earlier this year.
Adewale Ogunleye, chi
Ogunleye was unable to return to the Chicago Bears' lineup after spraining his ankle in the first half of Sunday's victory over the Detroit Lions. The defensive end will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
Cedric Benson, chi
After getting just three carries in last week's season opener, Benson saw an increased role in Sunday's victory over the Detroit Lions, picking up 49 yards on 16 rushes. The Bears' rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, continues to serve as the primary backup to veteran Thomas Jones.
9/15/2005
Muhsin Muhammad, chi
Muhammad has been listed as probable on the Bears' injury report this week, as he continues to slowed by soreness in his side. The receiver, who took a hard hit to his ribs last weekend, plans to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's home opener against the Detroit Lions, barring any last-minute setbacks. He did not work out with the team on Wednesday, but should be back on the field Thursday or Friday.
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman has begun a rehab program after having the cast removed from his broken and surgically repaired left ankle earlier this week. The Bears' quarterback, who suffered the injury in a preseason contest more than a month ago, has not been placed on injured reserve, and he hopes to be back under center before the end of the season.
9/14/2005
John St. Clair, chi
Filling the roster spot of the waived Marc Colombo, St. Clair has signed with the Chicago Bears. After making 14 starts with the Dolphins in 2004, the offensive lineman fell out of favor with new head coach Nick Saban and was slated to fill a backup role in 2005. He was released just prior to the start of the regular season.
9/8/2005
Jerry Azumah, chi
Although he's not quite back to 100 percent after undergoing hip surgery early last month, Azumah has been practicing with the Chicago Bears all week and has reported no major problems. As a result, the cornerback is listed as probable on the team's injury report, and he is expected to be in the lineup for Sunday's season opener against the Washington Redskins, barring any setbacks.
Cedric Benson, chi
Although nothing has been made official at this point, it appears Benson should see some time in Sunday's 2005 season opener against the Washington Redskins. The rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, missed the first 36 days of training camp in a holdout and has yet to digest the Bears' entire playbook. He's currently third on the depth chart behind Thomas Jones and Adrian Peterson.
9/7/2005
John St. Clair, chi
St. Clair has been released by the Miami Dolphins, opening a spot on the roster for cornerback Kiwaukee Thomas, who inked with the club on Wednesday. The offensive lineman fell out of favor with new head coach Nick Saban and was slated to fill a backup role in 2005. He made 14 starts last season.
9/3/2005
Todd McMillon, chi
McMillon, who had appeared in 48 games since 2000 with the Chicago Bears, was among the players cut by the team on Saturday. The reserve cornerback played mainly on special teams, leading the Bears in special teams stops in 2004.
9/2/2005
Justin Gage, chi
Despite some stiff competition from rookie Mark Bradley, Gage will go into the 2005 regular season as the Chicago Bears' No. 2 receiver, according to head coach Lovie Smith. The wideout, who will line up opposite offseason acquisition Muhsin Muhammad, hauled in 12 passes for 156 yards in 16 games last season.
8/31/2005
Dustin Lyman, chi
Limited by injuries for much of training camp, Lyman has been released by the Chicago Bears. The tight end appeared in all 16 of the team's games last season, hauling in 11 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.
8/30/2005
Jerry Azumah, chi
Azumah did some light work prior to the Bears' practice on Monday, and he plans to resume full-speed workouts within the next week. According to head coach Lovie Smith, the team expects Azumah to be in the starting lineup for Chicago's Week 1 battle against the Washington Redskins. The defensive back has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip earlier this month.
Chad Hutchinson, chi
Shortly after being demoted from starter to fourth on the depth chart, Hutchinson has been released by the Chicago Bears. In two exhibition game starts after Rex Grossman went down with a season-ending ankle injury, Hutchinson completed just eight of his 22 pass attempts, tossed four interceptions and was sacked six times.
8/29/2005
Chad Hutchinson, chi
Not only has Hutchinson lost the Bears' starting quarterback job, but he's slipped to fourth on the depth chart and is in danger of being cut. The veteran signal caller has struggled in the Bears' preseason contests, prompting the team to turn rookie Kyle Orton. Veteran Jeff Blake currently is listed as Orton's top backup with Kurt Kittner penciled in at No. 3.
Brendon Ayanbadejo, chi
The Miami Dolphins have traded Ayanbadejo to the Chicago Bears in exchange for tight end John Owens and a future conditional draft pick. The reserve linebacker led the Dolphins in special teams tackles each of the past two years and was an alternate on special teams for the Pro Bowl last season.
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson has agreed to a five-year deal with the Bears and will begin practicing immediately. The deal ends a 36-day holdout, the longest by a Bears rookie in franchise history. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Kyle Orton, chi
As was rumored over the weekend, the Chicago Bears have named Orton as their starting quarterback going into the 2005 regular season. With projected starter Rex Grossman out for the year with a broken ankle, the rookie signal caller has looked solid in the Bears' recent preseason contests, prompting the team to give him the nod. Chad Hutchinson, who was the top candidate for the job when Grossman went down, has been demoted to No. 4 on the depth chart.
8/28/2005
Kyle Orton, chi
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Bears rookie quarterback Kyle Orton will likely be named the regular-season starter. The announcement is expected to come as early as Sunday, as the former fourth-round pick has played his way into the opportunity.
8/27/2005
Cedric Benson, chi
In a surprise move, Cedric Benson visited Bears practice on Thursday and had a 45-minute meeting with general manager Jerry Angelo. The two met without Benson's agent present in an effort to open the lines of communication. The meeting ended without a signed deal.
Kyle Orton, chi
Kyle Orton is doing everything he can to cause a quarterback controversy in Chicago. On Friday, Orton completed seven of nine passes for 79 yards with one touchdown against the Bills. Bears starting quarterback Chad Hutchinson, meanwhile, completed just three of his 14 passes, while being picked off twice.
8/25/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
With first-round pick (fourth overall) Cedric Benson still nowhere near an agreement on a contract with the Chicago Bears, the team will go into the season with Jones as their starting tailback. Despite missing nearly a month with a sprained toe, Jones came up just shy of the 1,000-yard mark last season, rushing for 948 yards and seven touchdowns on 240 carries. He also had 56 catches for 427 yards.
8/18/2005
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson still hasn't agreed to terms on a contract -- the last 2005 draft pick yet to sign. According to general manager Jerry Angelo, the Chicago Bears have made their final offer to the fourth overall pick, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons with the Texas Longhorns.
8/15/2005
Jeff Blake, chi
Blake has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears. With starter Rex Grossman expected to miss 3-4 months with a broken ankle, the club will look to Chad Hutchinson to fill the void on the first team, while Blake and rookie Kyle Orton will battle for backup duties, according to head coach Lovie Smith.
Desmond Clark, chi
Clark is finally back on the field with the Chicago Bears. For the first time since spraining his ankle in May, the tight end took part in the team's workout on Sunday and reported no major problems. He had 24 catches for 282 yards and one touchdown last season and hopes to improve on those numbers in 2005.
Chad Hutchinson, chi
Hutchinson will take over as the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback after top signal caller Rex Grossman broke his left ankle in Friday's preseason meeting with the St. Louis Rams. In five games last season, Hutchinson went 92 of 161 for 903 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. He was sacked 23 times and fumbled eight times, losing four.
Mark Bradley, chi
Bradley suffered a sprained right shoulder during Friday's exhibition game against the St. Louis Rams and was unable to practice with the Bears over the weekend. The rookie receiver, who was a second-round pick in this year's draft, currently is listed as day-to-day. He set a Hall of Fame game record with 131 yards on five receptions last Monday, increasing his chances of landing a prominent role in the Bears' passing attack this season.
8/12/2005
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman left Friday night's game against the Rams in the first quarter. Preliminary results say that he suffered a broken left ankle, and is likely to miss 3-4 months. After missing the majority of last season with a torn ACL, Grossman was looking forward to his first full season as the Bears' starting quarterback, but will now have to put those plans on hold.
8/3/2005
Jerry Azumah, chi
Azumah is expected to undergo arthroscopic hip surgery on Wednesday, and the Bears' starting cornerback could be sidelined for up to four weeks. Last year, Azumah missed most of training camp and the first four games of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a neck vertebra. The veteran is entering his seventh season with Chicago, and he has started 37 games over the past three years. Azumah has picked off four passes in each of the past two campaigns.
7/31/2005
Desmond Clark, chi
Clark, recovering from a sprained ankle suffered prior to the start of the Bears' minicamp in May, did some light work after Friday's workout, and is nearly ready to return to practice. The tight end has missed the entire first week of the team's minicamp, but he appears close to returning.
7/24/2005
Cedric Benson, chi
Benson, the No. 4 pick in this year's draft, will not be on the field when the Bears hold their first official training-camp practice of the 2005 season on Sunday. The running back out of Texas has yet to sign with the team, and he likely won't ink a deal until several other '05 first-rounders come to terms with their respective clubs.
Kyle Orton, chi
The Bears signed Orton to a four-year deal on Sunday, and the team's fourth-round selection in this year's draft will report to camp. Orton was a Heisman Trophy candidate at Purdue last season before he was sidelined with hip and abdominal injuries. He is expected to be the Bears' third-string quarterback behind starter Rex Grossman and No. 2 man Chad Hutchinson.
7/23/2005
Marc Edwards, chi
Edwards signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears on Saturday. The fullback, who was released by Jacksonville in March, received a deal believed to be worth approximately $665,000.
7/21/2005
Desmond Clark, chi
Clark continues to recover from a sprained ankle, an injury suffered just prior to the start of the Bears' minicamp in May. As a result, the tight end will begin training camp on the active/non-football injury list, allowing him to fully recover from the ailment. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready for the start of the regular season.
Bryan Johnson, chi
Johnson continues to battle some lingering pain in his surgically repaired right foot, and he likely won't be ready for the start of training camp. As a result, the Chicago Bears plan to place him on the physically unable to perform list for the time being. Barring any setbacks in his rehab and recovery, Johnson should be good to go by the time the regular season rolls around.
Jason McKie, chi
Tests have revealed that McKie has a torn pectoral muscle, an injury suffered while lifting weights earlier this month. The Bears' fullback is expected to miss at least two months, and there is a chance he could be forced to sit out the entire 2005 campaign. He appeared in 15 games last season, hauling in 13 passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
6/24/2005
Adewale Ogunleye, chi
According to Bears head coach Lovie Smith, Ogunleye has returned to practice with the team, and he should be at full strength by the start of training camp. The defensive lineman, who was acquired from the Miami Dolphins last year, has been recovering from offseason surgery to repair a slight ligament tear in ankle.
6/22/2005
Mark Bradley, chi
The Bears signed Bradley to a five-year deal on Tuesday that reportedly contains a signing bonus of a little more than $2 million. The 39th overall pick in April's draft, Bradley played the past three seasons for Oklahoma. He likely will see most of his playing time on special teams in 2005, while slowly being worked into a few packages on offense.
6/13/2005
Tank Johnson, chi
According to a report in The Chicago Tribune, Johnson was arrested early Saturday morning after police found a loaded handgun in his truck. The defensive tackle was charged with one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison. Johnson's attorney, Elliot Zinger, said his client simply made a mistake and was "from another state and not familiar with what's going on here [in Illinois]."
6/11/2005
Bryan Johnson, chi
Johnson had been unable to take part in the team's offseason practice sessions, as the fullback continues to recover from December surgery on his right foot. The Bears hope he will be ready to go when training camp opens next month.
6/9/2005
Alex Bannister, chi
Bannister suffered a broken collarbone in Seahawks' minicamp on Wednesday when he collided with a teammate during a special teams drill. It was the same injury that the fifth-year receiver suffered last fall that forced him to miss the final nine games of the regular season. He likely will miss most of training camp, but he is expected to be ready for Seattle's season opener against the Jaguars on September 11.
5/21/2005
Rex Grossman, chi
Grossman reportedly had no problems with his surgically repaired right knee during the Bears' first minicamp practice on Friday. The third-year quarterback, who played just three games in 2004 after tearing his ACL on the lone touchdown run of his NFL career,
5/12/2005
Doug Brien, chi
Brien, who was released by the New York Jets after they selected Mike Nugent in last month's NFL draft, has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears. The veteran kicker was 24-for-29 on field-goal attempts and 33 of 34 on point-after tries in 16 regular-season games in 2004, but missed a pair of field goals in the Jets' final playoff contest, which likely sealed his fate.
5/11/2005
Dante Wesley, chi
The Panthers signed Wesley to a one-year, $656,000 deal on Tuesday. The restricted free agent has been in Carolina for the past three seasons, seeing action in 42 games. He again will compete for time at one of the reserve cornerback positions, but most of his playing time will come on special teams, where he accounted for 14 tackles and two assists in 2004.
5/3/2005
Justin Gage, chi
According to Bears wide receivers coach Darryl Drake, Gage has the inside track on the team's No. 2 wideout spot opposite Muhsin Muhammad for the 2005 season. Gage caught just 12 passes in 2004 for 156 yards and no scores, after posting 17-338-2 as a rookie in '03.
4/28/2005
Doug Brien, chi
Brien has been released by the New York Jets. The veteran kicker, who was 24-for-29 on field-goal attempts and 33 of 34 on point-after tries in 16 regular-season games in 2004, became expendable when the team selected All-American Mike Nugent in the second round of last weekend's NFL Draft.
4/25/2005
Thomas Jones, chi
Even though the Chicago Bears used the fourth overall pick in this year's draft to select Cedric Benson, Jones will go into training camp as the team's starting running back, according to head coach Lovie Smith. Jones came up just shy of the 1,000-yard mark for the season, despite missing nearly a month with a sprained toe. He had 948 yards and seven touchdowns on 240 carries, along with 56 catches for 427 yards. He fumbled only two times all year, losing one.
