Alex Smith, sfo

6/19/2006

Tom Rouen, sfo

Rouen's brief stint with Seattle ended on Monday when the Seahawks released him. The 13-year veteran punter was signed in Week 5 to replace Leo Araguz and punted in 12 regular season games and the entire playoffs for the Seahawks. He averaged 41.6 yards on 62 regular-season kicks and had a 50.2 yard average in Seattle's 21-10 loss to Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.

5/5/2006

Trent Dilfer, sfo

San Francisco acquired Dilfer on Thursday in a trade that sent Ken Dorsey and a 2007 seventh-round draft pick to Cleveland. Dilfer, who is recovering from offseason knee surgery, will back up starting quarterback Alex Smith. Dilfer went 4-7 with the Browns last season before losing his starting job to rookie Charlie Frye. He completed 59.8 percent of his passes in 2005 for 2,321 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

5/4/2006

Chad Williams, sfo

Williams signed with San Francisco on Wednesday after spending the last four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. The safety played under current 49ers coach Mike Nolan when he was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Williams appeared in 64 games with the Ravens, making 158 tackles, eight interceptions and 5 1/2 sacks.

4/17/2006

T.J. Slaughter, sfo

Slaughter was signed by the 49ers on Monday, his fifth NFL team in five seasons. The 29-year-old linebacker recorded nine tackles in 10 games with the Saints last season. Slaughter played three-plus seasons with the Jaguars after they selected him in the third round of the 2000 draft. He also has spent time with the Packers and Ravens.

4/13/2006

Sammy Davis, sfo

The Chargers traded Davis to the 49ers for wide receiver Rashaun Woods on Wednesday. Davis, the 30th overall pick in the 2003 draft, started just four games at cornerback last season recording 26 total tackles and one sack. His best season was 2003 when he started every game and tallied 58 tackles and two interceptions.

4/12/2006

Tom Rouen, sfo

Rouen was re-signed by the Seahawks on Tuesday. The 13-year veteran punter signed with Seattle in Week 5 last season to replace Leo Araguz. He punted 61 times over the final 12 regular-season games with an average of 41.6 yards and had 20 punts downed inside opponents' 20-yard line. Rouen also has played with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

3/28/2006

Terry Jones, sfo

Jones re-signed Tuesday with the San Francisco 49ers, who claimed him off waivers from Baltimore last season.

3/21/2006

Larry Allen, sfo

The Cowboys released Allen on Tuesday, meaning the 12-year veteran is likely finished with Dallas. The guard, one of the most dominant in NFL history, was due a $2 million roster bonus on April 1, but the Cowboys chose to cut him instead.

3/13/2006

Antonio Bryant, sfo

Bryant is joining his third team in five career seasons after signing a four-year deal worth $15 million that will include $5 million in bonuses. The 49ers just dealt Brandon Lloyd to the Redskins for two draft picks, so Bryant could have a significant impact.

3/11/2006

Joe Nedney, sfo

Nedney re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers for four more years Saturday. The 49ers kicker completed 26-of-28 field-goal attempts and all 19 extra points last season.

2/7/2006

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer had surgery on his right knee on Tuesday to repair a partial tear of a patella tendon. The Browns' quarterback was bothered with knee problems during the season, which caused him to miss the final five games.

1/26/2006

Frank Gore, sfo

Gore reportedly had surgery in Miami this week to repair one of his separated shoulders. The San Francisco 49ers' running back must wait another four weeks to have the same procedure performed on the opposite shoulder.

1/1/2006

Antonio Bryant, sfo

Bryant is 114 yards shy of posting 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in four NFL seasons. The Cleveland receiver has steadily improved his receiving yards and reception totals as a pro. After recording 812 receiving yards for Dallas and Cleveland in 2004, Bryant must surpass 100 receiving yards for the first time all season against the Ravens Sunday to reach the 1,000-yard plateau.

12/28/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow will miss Sunday's season finale against the Houston Texans after being placed on injured reserve by the San Francisco 49ers. The running back has been hobbled by a bruised left knee for more than a month, sitting out three of the team's last four contests. He finishes the year with 581 yards and three touchdowns on 176 carries, along with 31 catches for 241 yards in 12 games.

Frank Gore, sfo

Gore will get the starting nod in Sunday's season finale against the Houston Texans, filling in for Kevan Barlow, who was placed on injured reserve by the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday. The rookie running back has appeared in 13 games this year, picking up 500 yards and three touchdowns on 102 carries, as well as 13 catches for 118 yards.

12/24/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow was inactive for Saturday's game against the St. Louis Rams because of a left knee injury that has now cost him to miss three of the 49ers' last four games.

12/23/2005

Frank Gore, sfo

Gore is expected to start against the Rams Saturday, reports the Sacramento Bee. San Francisco's rookie running back was initially listed as questionable for play after suffering an injury to his shoulder in the 49ers' 10-9 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.

12/22/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

After failing to practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday, Barlow now is considered doubtful for Saturday's matchup with the St. Louis Rams, according to the team's website. The running back has been battling a bruised left knee over the past month, forcing him to miss two of the Niners' last three games.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

After missing the 49ers' last three games because of his troublesome knee, Battle returned to practice with the team on Wednesday and reported no major problems. The receiver does not appear on the injury report, and he plans to be available for Saturday's matchup with the St. Louis Rams. He'll likely split time with Johnnie Morton, opposite Brandon Lloyd.

Frank Gore, sfo

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping Gore can return to practice on Thursday after missing the previous two days with the shoulder injury he suffered last weekend against the Jaguars. If he's able to go this Saturday in a matchup with the St. Louis Rams, the rookie running back will handle the bulk of the rushing load in place of Kevan Barlow, who is doubtful with a nagging knee injury.

12/15/2005

Bryant Young, sfo

Young, who has been sidelined for nearly a month with tears of the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his right knee, was back at practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday. Barring any setbacks, the veteran defensive end will be in the lineup for Sunday's tussle with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Officially, he has been listed as probable.

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow has been downgraded to doubtful on the 49ers' injury report this week after failing to practice with the team on Wednesday. The running back has been battling a bruised left knee recently, which actually forced him to miss a Week 13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He tried to play through the ailment last weekend, but picked up just 33 yards on 11 carries.

Frank Gore, sfo

With Kevan Barlow expected to miss this weekend's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars because of a knee injury, Gore likely will get the starting nod in the 49ers' backfield. The rookie running back, who was a third-round pick in this year's draft, has 353 yards and a touchdown on 73 carries in 11 games this season. He's also hauled in 10 passes for 61 yards, but lost two fumbles.

12/13/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle continues to be hobbled by his troublesome knee, and there is no guarantee that he will be able to return to action this season. However, the 49ers are optimistic and have yet to rule out the receiver officially. Veteran Johnnie Morton will remain in the starting lineup opposite Brandon Lloyd until Battle is strong enough to take the field. In eight contests this season, including six starts, Battle has 25 catches for 274 yards and three touchdowns.

12/9/2005

Johnnie Morton, sfo

Morton did not practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday so he could undergo a precautionary MRI on his sore Achilles. The veteran receiver hopes to return to the field on Friday and be ready for Sunday's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. In 12 games this season, he has 20 catches for 260 yards and no touchdowns.

Kevan Barlow, sfo

After missing one game with a sore left knee, Barlow returned to practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, although he did not take part in the entire workout. The running back remains listed as questionable on the injury report, and it appears he will be a game-time decision.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle remains doubtful for Sunday's game against the Seahawks after being unable to practice again Thursday.

12/7/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer's knees are probably healthy enough for him to play, but the Browns will stick with rookie Charlie Frye as their starting quarterback in Sunday's matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to head coach Romeo Crennel. The veteran signal caller has seen his playing time cut over the past few weeks, and he was held out of last weekend's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars all together.

12/6/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow plans to test out his sore left knee at practice over the next couple of days, and the San Francisco 49ers are optimistic that he will be able to return to the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. An MRI taken on the knee last Friday revealed no structural damage, but the running back was held out of the team's loss to the Cardinals as a precautionary measure.

Marques Anderson, sfo

After being released by the Denver Broncos last month, Anderson has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran safety inked with the Broncos in August after being cut by the Oakland Raiders. He appeared in six games, notching just three tackles.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle had been optimistic that he'd be ready for last Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, but he was unable to take the field with the 49ers, due to the troublesome knee that has plagued him the majority of the 2005 campaign. The receiver hopes to test things out in the coming days to determine if he'll be available of this weekend's tussle with the Seattle Seahawks. Veteran Johnnie Morton will get the nod opposite Brandon Lloyd if Battle cannot go.

12/4/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer was limited in practice with the Cleveland Browns all week, due to soreness in both knees, especially the right. As a result, the quarterback will be absent from the starting lineup in Sunday's battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars, allowing rookie Charlie Frye to get the nod for the first time in his NFL career. Dilfer will be available for backup duty, if needed.

Bryan Gilmore, sfo

Gilmore will get the starting nod opposite Chris Chambers in Sunday's meeting with the Buffalo Bills, replacing veteran Marty Booker, who is out with a strained calf muscle. In 11 games this season, Gilmore has just four catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow officially has been ruled out of Sunday's meeting with the Arizona Cardinals, due to the sore left knee that forced him to miss some practice time late in the week. With regular backup Frank Gore sidelined as well, the 49ers will look to Maurice Hicks to handle the bulk of the rushing load this weekend.

Maurice Hicks, sfo

Hicks will get the starting nod at tailback for the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, replacing the injured Kevan Barlow, who will be inactive with a sore left knee. The veteran running back will handle the majority of the carries, as regular backup Frank Gore is also sidelined with injury.

12/2/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow did not practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday and was scheduled to undergo a precautionary MRI to determine the cause of the discomfort in his ailing left knee. The injury is not considered serious at this point, but the team has listed the running back as questionable for Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, primarily due to the missed workout.

12/1/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

After missing practice the previous day, Dilfer split snaps with rookie Charlie Frye in Thursday's workout. The veteran quarterback, who is bothered by soreness in both knees, continues to be listed as questionable on the Browns' injury report, and there is a good chance that he will be a game-time decision for Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Joe Nedney, sfo

Nedney plans to test out his ailing groin over the next couple of days to determine if he will be available for Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. The kicker did not practice with the 49ers on Wednesday and currently is listed as questionable on the injury report.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle did not practice with the 49ers on Wednesday, giving him some extra time to rest the troublesome knee that has plagued him the majority of the 2005 campaign. The receiver, who had minor arthroscopic surgery on the knee last month, has been in the lineup the past couple of games, and had his best outing of the season in last weekend's loss to the Tennessee Titans, hauling in seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Frank Gore, sfo

Gore has yet to return to practice with the San Francisco 49ers, and he is not expected to be ready for Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. The rookie running back, who has been sidelined since Week 10 with a strained hip flexor, currently is listed as doubtful on the injury report.

11/29/2005

Jeremy Newberry, sfo

Newberry will be forced to undergo more surgery on his troublesome right knee within the next couple weeks, which will prevent him from playing the rest of the season. As a result, the San Francisco 49ers have placed the veteran center on injured reserve for the second consecutive year.

Alex Smith, sfo

After missing the team's last five games with a sprained left knee, Smith will return to the 49ers' starting lineup for Sunday's meeting with the Arizona Cardinals and should remain atop the depth chart for the remainder of the 2005 campaign, according to head coach Mike Nolan. As a result, Ken Dorsey will drop back down to No. 2, while Cody Pickett will serve as the third-string signal caller. In four contests this season, Smith has posted a dismal 17.5 passer rating.

11/28/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer missed some time in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings after injuring his right knee during the third quarter. The Browns' veteran quarterback left the stadium with the knee wrapped in ice, and he is scheduled to undergo some precautionary tests on Monday to rule out any serious damage. For now, he is considered as day-to-day.

11/27/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer will start for Cleveland in Minnesota Sunday, CBS is reporting. Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said earlier in the week that he would stick with Dilfer, and nothing changed over the course of another week of practices.

Joe Nedney, sfo

Nedney is inactive for San Francisco's Sunday showdown against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. The 49ers' kicker will miss the game with a strained left groin. He is 18-for-20 in field-goal attempts this season, and a perfect 13-for-13 on extra points.

Frank Gore, sfo

Gore is out for San Francisco's matchup with the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on Sunday. The 49ers' running back won't face the Titans because of a hip injury. Gore has 65 rushes for 326 yards and a touchdown. He is averaging 5.0 yards a carry.

11/25/2005

Joe Nedney, sfo

Nedney, the 49ers most consistent scoring threat this season, missed Thursday's practice with a strained left groin, the San Jose Mercury News reported. The San Francisco kicker has successfully converted 18 of 20 kicks and is 13-for-13 on extra points this season.

11/22/2005

Bryant Young, sfo

An MRI exam has revealed that Young has tears of the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his right knee, injuries suffered while making a tackle on Seattle's Shaun Alexander on Sunday. The defensive lineman, who also sprained his ankle on the play, is not expected to require surgery at this point, but he will be sidelined for at least the next three weeks. If he doesn't respond to treatment, there is a chance Young could miss the rest of the 2005 campaign.

11/21/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

According to Browns head coach Romeo Crennel, Dilfer will remain in the starting role for the foreseeable future, but the team plans to get rookie Charlie Frye some playing time going forward as well. The two quarterbacks split snaps in Sunday's matchup with the Miami Dolphins, with Frye making his NFL debut.

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Suffering his second concussion of the season, Barlow was unable to finish Sunday's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. The running back, who rushed for 21 yards on 12 carries and hauled in two passes for 17 yards prior to his departure, was replaced in the 49ers' backfield by Maurice Hicks. Regular backup Frank Gore was unavailable, due to a hip injury.

11/18/2005

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

According to head coach Joe Gibbs, Jacobs is slated to step into the Redskins' starting lineup, beginning with this week's matchup with the Oakland Raiders. The third-year receiver claims the spot normally filled by David Patten, who is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and miss at least a couple of weeks.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle has not practiced with the 49ers over the past couple of days after undergoing a minor arthroscopic surgery on his ailing knee earlier this week. The receiver, who has been limited to just two catches since spraining the knee in late September, is expected to be a game-time decision for Sunday's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. Officially, he has been listed as questionable.

11/17/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith's sprained right knee has shown improvement recently, allowing him to practice with the 49ers on Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month. The quarterback still needs some time before he can return to the starting lineup, however, so Ken Dorsey will get the nod in this weekend's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

11/16/2005

Terry Jones, sfo

The San Francisco 49ers have claimed Jones off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. The tight end, who appeared in just one game with Baltimore this season, has 50 catches for 417 yards and five touchdowns in 46 career contests, including 29 starts.

Trent Smith, sfo

Smith has been released by the San Francisco 49ers, opening a spot on the roster for fellow tight end Terry Jones, whoh was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday. After missing his first two NFL campaigns with a broken leg, Smith returned this season to haul in three passes for seven yards in five games, including two starts.

11/15/2005

Marques Anderson, sfo

Anderson has been waived by the Denver Broncos, opening a spot on the roster for rookie tight end Wesley Duke, who was promoted from the practice squad on Tuesday. The veteran safety inked with the Broncos in August after being released by the Oakland Raiders. He appeared in six games, notching just three tackles.

11/14/2005

Tony Parrish, sfo

Parrish will miss the rest of the 2005 campaign after breaking his left leg in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears. The 49ers' veteran safety, who will be placed on injured reserve in the coming days, finishes the year with 44 tackles and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

11/13/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

The 49ers will not hazard further injury to Alex Smith when they face the Chicago Bears today, declaring the rookie quarterback inactive for the game.

11/11/2005

Frank Gore, sfo

Nursing a sore foot, Gore was held out of practice on Wednesday. However, the rookie running back was able to work out with the 49ers on Thursday, and he is expected to be available for Sunday's matchup with the Chicago Bears. Officially, he has been listed as probable.

11/10/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Resting a minor quadriceps injury, Barlow did not practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday, and he has been listed as probable on this week's injury report. As long as he can return to the field within the next day or two and doesn't experience any major problems, the running back will be in the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Chicago Bears.

11/8/2005

Ahmed Plummer, sfo

Plummer is slated to return to practice with the San Francisco 49ers later this week, and if no problems are reported, he should be available for Sunday's meeting with the Chicago Bears. The cornerback underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb in early September, then had an arthroscopic procedure to remove a bone chip from his left ankle later in the month. He has missed the team's last five games.

Jonas Jennings, sfo

Jennings is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair the torn labrum in his ailing right shoulder. If extensive damage is found, the 49ers' offensive lineman likely will be forced to miss the rest of the 2005 campaign. He has not played since the third game of the season.

11/3/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

The swelling in Smith's sprained right knee has decreased, and the 49ers' quarterback is no longer wearing a heavy brace on his leg. Despite the progress, he has yet to return to the practice field and already has been ruled out of Sunday's meeting with the New York Giants. The team plans to work the rookie back in slowly, and he's not expected to return until at least a home game against the Seattle Seahawks on November 20.

11/2/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer played a little better in last weekend's loss to the Houston Texans, but overall, his struggles continued. Despite the problems, Browns head coach Romeo Crennel has decided to stick with the veteran, announcing that he will be under center when the team takes the field against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Over his last three games (all Cleveland losses), Dilfer is 38 of 74 for 405 yards, four interceptions and only one touchdown. He's also lost three fumbles.

11/1/2005

Jesse Palmer, sfo

Palmer has signed with the San Francisco 49ers, supplying the team with some much-needed depth at the quarterback position. The veteran is slated to serve as the inexperienced Cody Pickett's backup this weekend, as regular starter Alex Smith (knee) and No. 2 Ken Dorsey (ankle) likely will be unavailable, due to injuries.

Shaun Hill, sfo

With No. 1 quarterback Daunte Culpepper out for the season with a major knee injury, Hill will move up a spot on the Vikings' depth chart, taking over as the primary (and only) backup to new starter Brad Johnson. Hill has yet to take a snap in a regular-season NFL game.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle originally sprained his knee in late September and tried to return a couple weeks later, but aggravated the problem and has been out since. Reportedly, the leg has improved recently, and 49ers head coach Mike Nolan is optimistic that the receiver will be available for this weekend's matchup with the New York Giants. He is expected to test things out at practice later this week.

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith has yet to be cleared to bend his ailing knee, and he almost certainly will be unavailable for Sunday's matchup with the New York Giants, according to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan. The rookie quarterback strained ligaments in the knee over a week ago and missed last Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With top backup Ken Dorsey listed as doubtful with a sprained ankle, third-stringer Cody Pickett is expected to get the nod this weekend.

10/31/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

With backup Ken Dorsey under center in Sunday's 15-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Niners had trouble moving the ball via the pass, so they looked to Barlow to shoulder the majority of the offensive load. The running back responded to the call and recorded his first 100-yard game of the 2005 campaign, rushing for 101 yards on 26 carries. He also hauled in two passes for a team-high 21 yards.

10/30/2005

Antonio Bryant, sfo

After suffering through two poor weeks, Bryant will remain the Browns' starting wideout. A series of dropped passes during crucial moments of the past few games put the receiver's starting job at risk, but head coach Romeo Crennel has given him the benefit of the doubt and will let Bryant keep his spot for at least one more week.

10/29/2005

Jonas Jennings, sfo

Jennings will once again sit out of the 49ers game on Sunday due to a shoulder injury. The offensive tackle has been hurt and hasn't played since week three when he suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

10/28/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle has yet to practice with the 49ers this week, and it is looking more and more like he will miss another game with his sprained knee. Originally suffering the injury on September 25, the receiver tried to return a couple weeks later, but aggravated the problem and has been out since. He remains listed as questionable.

10/27/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle, who has missed the majority of the last month with a strained knee, plans to test out his leg at practice this week, and if no problems are reported, he could return to action in Sunday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Originally suffering the injury on September 25, the 49ers' receiver tried to return a couple weeks later, but aggravated the problem and has been out since. Officially, he has been listed as questionable.

Alex Smith, sfo

Unable to practice this week because of two sprained ligaments inside his right knee, as well as some fluid build-up behind the kneecap, Smith is not expected to be available for Sunday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As a result, backup Ken Dorsey will get the starting nod for the 49ers, according to head coach Mike Nolan. Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, suffered the injury last weekend, but was not forced to leave the game.

10/26/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Despite posting eight turnovers over the past three weeks and failing to lead the Browns' offense on a touchdown-scoring drive in the last two games, Dilfer will remain under center for Sunday's matchup with the Houston Texans, according to head coach Romeo Crennel. For the season, the veteran quarterback is 118 of 187 for 1,260 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions.

10/25/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith was sporting a heavy wrap and brace on his right knee and had a noticeable limp at the 49ers' training complex on Monday. Further tests have revealed two sprained ligaments inside the knee, as well as some fluid build-up behind the kneecap. The quarterback, who remained in the lineup after suffering in the injury over the weekend, continues to be listed as probable for Sunday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His status will be updated in the coming days.

10/24/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer had his worst outing of the season in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Detroit Lions, posting a dismal 22.4 passer rating. The Browns' veteran quarterback finished the game 10 of 19 for 73 yards with three interceptions and no touchdowns. He was sacked four times as well, tying a season high.

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow picked up 54 yards and scored a touchdown on 14 carries in Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins before leaving for good in the fourth quarter with a bruised quadriceps muscle. The 49ers will keep an eye on the running back over the next couple of days, but the injury is not considered serious at this point. His status will be updated later in the week.

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith might be limited in practice this week after straining his knee in Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins. However, the injury is not considered serious, and the 49ers expect the quarterback to be ready for next weekend's matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith finished Sunday's game 8 of 16 for 92 yards and one interception. He was sacked five times and fumbled three times, losing one.

10/21/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Despite having a bye week to rest and receive treatment on his strained knee, Battle still is not ready to return to action and has been listed as doubtful for Sunday's meeting with the Washington Redskins. The 49ers' receiver, who has been sidelined for nearly a month, could be cleared to practice next week, according to head coach Mike Nolan.

10/18/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

The San Francisco 49ers apparently have faith in using Smith as their starting quarterback for the rest of the 2005 campaign, as the team has traded veteran Tim Rattay to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. The No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft made his first regular-season start in a Week 5 loss to the Indianapolis Colts and posted a dismal 8.5 passer rating after claiming the top job from the struggling Rattay.

10/16/2005

Walt Harris, sfo

Harris, who has missed the past two games because of a bruised calf, has been able to practice this week. The Washington cornerback is expected to start Sunday against Kansas City. He will play in place of the injured Shawn Springs, who is out with a bruised shin.

10/13/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

With a bye this week, Battle has some extra time to rest his strained knee, but according to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, the receiver will be listed as questionable or doubtful for the team's Week 7 meeting with the Washington Redskins. Battle has been sidelined for nearly three weeks already.

10/12/2005

Jeff Ulbrich, sfo

Ulbrich sought opinions from several specialists before finally deciding to undergo surgery to repair the ruptured biceps tendon in his right arm on Wednesday. The 49ers' linebacker, who suffered the injury in Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts, will be placed on injured reserve and miss the rest of the 2005 season. He finishes the year with 42 tackles and a forced fumble in five games.

10/11/2005

Walt Harris, sfo

After missing the previous two games, Redskins defensive back Walt Harris expects to play this coming Sunday against the Chiefs. Harris has sat out the last two games with an injured quadriceps, and is now considered day-to-day. Barring any setbacks in practice this week, Harris will return to the starting defensive backfield on Sunday.

Jeff Ulbrich, sfo

An MRI on Ulbrich's ailing left arm has revealed a ruptured biceps tendon, and the 49ers' linebacker might be forced to undergo season-ending surgery. He will get a second opinion over the next couple of days, but it appears going under the knife is the likely course of action. If he tries to play through the injury, Ulbrich reportedly could risk a 50 percent loss in arm strength for the rest of his life.

10/10/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow turned in his best performance of the 2005 campaign, falling just short of the century mark in Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The 49ers' running back finished the game with 99 yards on 18 carries and also hauled in three passes for 29 yards.

Antonio Bryant, sfo

Bryant had his best game of the 2005 campaign, hauling in six passes for a season-high 83 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's ugly 20-10 victory over the Chicago Bears. The receiver has been Trent Dilfer's primary target in the Browns' passing attack this year, notching 21 catches for 255 yards and two scores.

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith's first career regular-season NFL start is likely one he'd rather forget. The 49ers' rookie quarterback, who took over for the struggling Tim Rattay, posted a dismal 8.5 passer rating in Sunday's 28-3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, going 9 of 23 for 74 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions. In addition, he was sacked five times and fumbled twice, losing one.

10/9/2005

B.J. Tucker, sfo

The San Francisco 49ers have promoted Tucker from their practice squad. The cornerback fills the roster spot of linebacker Jamie Winborn, who was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this week.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle was not expected to play in Sunday's matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, but he was on the 49ers' active roster and available for duty. The receiver missed the team's previous game with a strained knee and had been listed as questionable after being limited in practice all week.

10/6/2005

Jonas Jennings, sfo

With the San Francisco 49ers having a bye in Week 6, Jennings admitted that he probably won't return to the lineup until at least an October 23 meeting with the Washington Redskins. The starting left tackle, currently listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, has a torn labrum in his shoulder, which will require surgery. He hopes to avoid going under the knife until after the season.

10/5/2005

Tom Rouen, sfo

Rouen has signed with the Seattle Seahawks, filling the roster spot of the struggling Leo Araguz. The 12-year veteran averaged 42.0 yards on 26 punts in four games with the Seahawks last season, but suffered a hamstring injury and missed the rest of the campaign.

Jonas Jennings, sfo

Jennings reportedly has a tear of the labrum in his shoulder, an injury that likely will prevent him from playing in Sunday's matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. Should the 49ers' starting left tackle be unavailable as expected, he will be replaced in the lineup by Anthony Clement.

Alex Smith, sfo

After evaluating both their top quarterbacks over the last couple of days, the San Francisco 49ers have decided to make a change at the position. Head coach Mike Nolan has promoted Smith into the starting role, replacing the struggling Tim Rattay. The rookie signal caller, who was the top overall pick in this year's draft, will make his first NFL regular-season start in Sunday's matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

10/4/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

According to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, Battle likely will not be recovered in time for Sunday's meeting with the Indianapolis Colts. The receiver, who has been sidelined with a strained knee, will be replaced in the lineup by veteran Johnnie Morton for the second consecutive week.

10/3/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle was inactive for Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City, due to a strained knee. The receiver, who was replaced in the 49ers' lineup by veteran Johnnie Morton, will be re-evaluated early this week to determine when he might be ready to return to action.

10/2/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle missed his third straight day of practice, and 49ers officials have downgraded him to questionable on this week's injury report. Battle strained his hamstring two weeks ago against the Cowboys, and although he played last week versus Arizona, it is likely that he will sit Sunday's game out. Johnnie Morton will start in Battle's place if he is unable to play.

9/30/2005

Walt Harris, sfo

Despite not practicing with the Washington Redskins this week, Harris is optimistic that he'll be ready for Sunday's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. The cornerback currently is listed as questionable with a strained calf.

9/29/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

Battle's strained hamstring has improved over the past couple of days, and the 49ers expect him to be ready for Sunday night's meeting with the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City. The receiver did not practice with the team on Wednesday, but he has been listed as probable on the injury report.

9/28/2005

Jason McAddley, sfo

McAddley has re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers, filling the roster spot of the injured Rashaun Woods. The receiver, who was a fifth-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, was released by the club just prior to the start of the regular season. In 22 career games, including nine starts, he has 31 catches for 453 yards and one touchdown.

9/27/2005

Ahmed Plummer, sfo

Plummer, who continues to recover after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb earlier this month, faces yet another procedure. The 49ers' cornerback needs arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip from his left ankle, and he could be sidelined anywhere from 2-6 weeks.

9/26/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

According to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, Battle will be listed as questionable for next weekend's meeting with the Arizona Cardinals after straining his hamstring in Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The starting wideout will receive treatment over the next couple of days before being re-evaluated later in the week to determine his status and availability. Prior to his departure, Battle had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

9/25/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

Johnson, suffering from a torn plantar fasciitis in his right foot, was placed on the injured reserve list, ending his season before he was able to play a down. Johnson was the 49ers' top receiver last year, with 82 catches for 825 yards and two touchdowns. He also missed the entire 2003 season with a broken collarbone.

9/23/2005

Jeremy Newberry, sfo

Newberry's troublesome right knee acted up on Thursday, preventing the starting center from taking part in the 49ers' workouts. Because of the absence, the team has downgraded him from probable to questionable on this week's injury report. Newberry indicated that the move was precautionary, and he fully expects to be in the lineup for Sunday's battle with the Dallas Cowboys.

9/22/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

Johnson saw some action during practice earlier this week, but was forced to the sidelines after aggravating his troublesome left foot while running a route. Tests have revealed that the tight end has a torn muscle, and the injury will force him to miss the rest of the 2005 campaign. The 49ers have placed him on injured reserve. Trent Smith has been working out with the Niners' first-team offense this week and should fill the void in the lineup.

Trent Smith, sfo

With regular starter Eric Johnson still sidelined with a foot injury, the 49ers have decided to give Smith a shot at filling the void at tight end, beginning with this week's meeting with the Dallas Cowboys. Smith, who was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month, was inactive for the Niners' first two games of the 2005 campaign, but has been working out with the first-team offense in practice this week.

9/20/2005

Kevan Barlow, sfo

Barlow is averaging just 2.3 yards per carry through two games this season, but the 49ers do not plan to make a lineup change, according to head coach Mike Nolan. The running back has 56 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, as well as five catches for 48 yards.

Eric Johnson, sfo

According to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, Johnson will undergo more tests later this week to determine if surgery is necessary to repair the damage in his ailing right foot. The team had hoped the tight end would be able to return to practice this week, but he has been slow to recover after suffering a partial tear in the arch of the foot. If Johnson is forced to go under the knife, he would be sidelined indefinitely.

9/19/2005

Trent Dilfer, sfo

Dilfer recorded the second-most passing yards of his NFL career, going 21 of 32 for 336 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's two-point victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. One of the 33-year-old quarterback's TD passes went for 80 yards to rookie Braylon Edwards, while another spanned 62 yards to tight end Steve Heiden.

9/16/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

According to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, the team is optimistic that Johnson will be able to return to practice as early as next week. The tight end has been slow to recover from a partial tear in the arch of his right foot, but it appears there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Officially, he is listed as doubtful for Sunday's matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, however, he is not expected to play.

9/15/2005

Ahmed Plummer, sfo

Plummer underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, an injury reportedly suffered in practice last week. The 49ers' cornerback, who notched 12 tackles while playing through the injury in last weekend's season opener, will be in the lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, but will be sporting a protective cast on his hand.

9/14/2005

Johnnie Morton, sfo

Morton has reported feeling better over the last couple of days, and he expects to be available for Sunday's meeting with the Eagles in Philadelphia. The 49ers' veteran receiver was unable to return to the lineup after suffering a concussion when he was tackled by the Rams' DeJuan Groce in the first half of Sunday's season-opening victory over St. Louis. He had one catch for 30 yards prior to his departure.

9/13/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

Johnson continues to be hobbled by a partial tear in the arch of his right foot, and he's currently doubtful for the 49ers' Week 2 meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to head coach Mike Nolan. The tight end has yet to resume practicing with the team, and a timetable for his return has not been set.

9/12/2005

Johnnie Morton, sfo

Morton was unable to return to the 49ers' lineup after suffering a concussion when he was tackled by the Rams' DeJuan Groce in the first half of Sunday's season-opening victory over St. Louis. The veteran receiver, who had one catch for 30 yards prior to his departure, will be re-evaluated over the next couple of days to determine his status.

9/11/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

As anticipated, Johnson will be inactive for Sunday's regular-season opener against the St. Louis Rams. The 49ers' tight end, who has been sidelined for nearly a month with a slight tear in the arch of his right foot, has been unable to practice and he is still sporting a protective boot. The team does not have a timetable for his return.

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

Still not quite fully recovered from a broken left big toe, Jacobs will be inactive for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears. The Redskins' reserve receiver has been practicing with the team over the past several days and should be available for Week 2. On Monday, Jacobs declared that he was about 80 percent.

9/10/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

San Francisco head coach Mike Nolan says he doesn't have a plan to get Smith playing time this season. "In all fairness to Tim (Rattay) and even the football team, I don't have a timetable," Nolan told the San Jose Mercury News on Friday. "The season will take care of itself, as far as what does happen. Going into it, if I had a perfect situation, it would stay status quo because I believe we would be getting better and better and winning."

9/9/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

Although he hasn't been ruled out officially, Johnson likely won't be in uniform for Sunday's season opener against the St. Louis Rams. The 49ers' tight end, who has been sidelined for nearly a month with a slight tear in the arch of his right foot, has been unable to practice and he is still sporting a protective boot. The team does not have a timetable for his return.

9/7/2005

Johnnie Morton, sfo

Morton has been passed on the depth chart by Arnez Battle and is currently third among San Francisco wide receivers. Last year with Kansas City, Morton caught 55 passes for 795 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games.

Arnaz Battle, sfo

After competing with Johnnie Morton for the job in training camp, Battle will begin the 2005 regular season as the San Francisco 49ers' No. 2 receiver, lining up opposite Brandon Lloyd. The wideout, who was a sixth-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, appeared in 14 games last season, hauling in eight passes for 143 yards. He also saw time on special teams, averaging 19.8 yards on 13 kickoff returns and 8.6 yards on 31 punt returns, including one taken back for a TD.

9/6/2005

Chris Hetherington, sfo

Adding some depth at fullback, the San Francisco 49ers signed Hetherington on Tuesday. The 10-year veteran was released on Saturday after spending the past two seasons with the Oakland Raiders. In 107 career games, he's rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, while hauling in 43 passes for 293 yards and a TD.

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

For the first time in nearly a month, Jacobs took part in a full practice with the Washington Redskins on Monday, and he is optimisitic that he'll be ready for this weekend's regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears. The receiver has been sidelined with a broken left big toe.

9/5/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

Johnson says he is doubtful for San Francisco's Week 1 showdown with St. Louis. The 49ers' starting tight end is battling plantar fascia in his right foot, an ailment that tends to linger.

9/3/2005

Travis Hall, sfo

The San Francisco 49ers signed Hall on Friday. The veteran defensive lineman was released by the Atlanta Falcons in a salary cap move in late February. Hall has spent his entire career with the falcons and ranks in the top five in the club's career sacks leaders, with 41.5.

Jesse Palmer, sfo

Palmer was among the players released by the New York Giants on Saturday, losing out to Tim Hasselbeck and Jared Lorenzen for the backup quarterback spots behind Eli Manning.

8/30/2005

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

Taylor's ailing toe continues to give him problems when making cuts, and it's unlikely that he will be available for the Redskins' preseason finale on Thursday. The receiver, who suffered the injury more than three weeks ago, hopes improvement is shown over the next couple of weeks so he can be ready for the start of the regular season.

8/29/2005

Jeremy Newberry, sfo

Newberry is slated to be activated from the physically unable to perform list by the San Francisco 49ers, and if no problems are reported over the next couple of days, he hopes to play in Thursday's exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers. The center has been sidelined since Week 1 of the 2004 campaign, undergoing two surgeries on his right knee over that span.

Eric Johnson, sfo

Johnson still has not returned to the field, as he continues to recover from a slight tear in the arch of his right foot. The 49ers' tight end already has been ruled out of Thursday's preseason finale against the San Diego Chargers, and his availability for the start of the regular season is no better than 50-50, according to head coach Mike Nolan. Johnson's recovery has been a bit slower than expected.

8/24/2005

Marques Anderson, sfo

Anderson, who was released by the Oakland Raiders earlier this week, has signed with the Denver Broncos. In 14 games with the Raiders last season, the safety recorded 74 tackles, one interception and a forced fumble.

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

Jacobs is no longer sporting a walking boot on his right foot and he's resumed light running on his own. However, the receiver, who has been sidelined with a sprained big toe, is still about a week away from returning to full-speed practice with the Redskins. He had 16 catches for 178 yards in 15 games last season.

P.J. Fleck, sfo

According to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, Fleck will be placed on injured reserve after recently undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder. The receiver will miss the entire 2005 campaign.

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith was expected to claim the starting quarterback job for the 49ers this season, but after struggling in the team's first two preseason games, the rookie and top overall pick in this year's draft will begin the 2005 campaign as the No. 2 signal caller. On Tuesday, head coach Mike Nolan named Tim Rattay as the top QB, at least to begin the year.

8/23/2005

Marques Anderson, sfo

Anderson has been released by the Oakland Raiders. The safety was expected to challenge for a starting job in the Raiders' defensive backfield this season, but with a healthy Derrick Gibson in camp, the team felt Anderson was expendable.

8/16/2005

Jonas Jennings, sfo

Sporting a protective cast, Jennings was back on the practice field with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, and there's a good chance that he'll be available for Saturday's exhibition game against the Denver Broncos. The starting offensive lineman missed more than a week after undergoing surgery to repair a tendon tear in his right index finger.

Frank Gore, sfo

In his first workout in nearly a week, Gore reported no problems after returning to practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, and as long as everything goes according to plan this week, he should make his debut in Saturday's preseason meeting against the Denver Broncos. The rookie running back, who was a third-round pick in this year's draft, had been sidelined with a shoulder injury.

8/15/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith was expected to get only 20-25 snaps in his NFL debut in Saturday night's preseason matchup against the Oakland Raiders, but since the 49ers were unable to get anything going, the rookie spent nearly the whole first half under center. The quarterback, who was the top overall pick in this year's draft, finished the game 3 of 9 for 25 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

8/12/2005

Jesse Palmer, sfo

Palmer reportedly is in the lead in the battle for the Giants' No. 2 quarterback job and will spell Eli Manning after a few series in Saturday's exhibition game against the Cleveland Browns. The 26-year-old signal caller is competing with Tim Hasselbeck for the primary backup role.

Eric Johnson, sfo

According to 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, tests have revealed that Johnson has a slight tear in the arch of his right foot. Although the injury will not require surgery at this point, the tight end is expected to be sidelined for up to two weeks. He will continue to receive treatment and be evaluated on a daily basis.

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

An MRI on Jacobs sprained big toe revealed no major damage, but the Redskins' receiver has been sporting a walking boot for the better part of a week as a precautionary measure. Jacobs, who suffered the injury during last Saturday's scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens, hopes to return to action next week. He will miss Saturday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

8/11/2005

Eric Johnson, sfo

Nursing a strained arch in his right foot, Johnson was unable to practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday and it is unlikely that he will be in the lineup for the team's first exhibition game on Saturday. The tight end will receive treatment and be evaluated on a daily basis.

8/10/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan has named Smith as the team's starter for their first exhibition game -- Saturday's battle with the Oakland Raiders. Despite getting the nod for the first preseason tilt, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft is not guaranteed the top job for the 2005 campaign, according to Nolan.

8/9/2005

Ben Sobieski, sfo

Unable to work out with the Bills so far in training camp because of a nagging back problem, Sobieski has been placed on injured reserve. The offensive lineman, who was slated to serve as a backup this season, will miss the entire 2005 campaign.

8/6/2005

Taylor Jacobs, sfo

Jacobs sprained a toe on his left foot during Saturday's scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens. The Washington wide receiver will undergo an MRI exam on Sunday, but he's expected to miss at least a week.

P.J. Fleck, sfo

Fleck was released from Stanford Hospital Friday afternoon, a little more than two hours after a scary collision between Fleck and lienbacker Jamie Winborn that left the receiver prone on the field for 15 minutes as trainers and paramedics worked on him. Fleck was taped to a backboard and taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a back sprain.

8/5/2005

Jonas Jennings, sfo

Jennings should be ready for the start of the regular season, but he'll miss the next week to 10 days after undergoing surgery on Friday to repair a tendon tear in his right index finger. The offensive lineman is slated to start at left tackle for the 49ers this season.

8/4/2005

Kris Richard, sfo

Richard was traded by the Seahawks to the Miami Dolphins in return for defensive end Ronald Flemons.

8/2/2005

Larry Allen, sfo

After missing the first four practices of Cowboys training camp, Allen was back in pads with the rest of the first team on Monday. The veteran guard had failed the club's conditioning drill last Friday and was held out of team workouts while he trained individually with a strength coach. The nine-time Pro Bowler is entering his 12th NFL campaign.

8/1/2005

Paul Zukauskas, sfo

Zukauskas signed with the 49ers on Sunday. The offensive lineman joins San Francisco after spending the first four years of his NFL career with the Browns. Zukauskas will provide depth along the offensive front five, and may see time with the first team in training camp while both Jeremy Newberry and David Baas recover from injuries.

David Baas, sfo

Just days after signing his first pro contract, Baas tore his hamstring while running and could be out of commission for as long as six weeks. The offensive lineman out of Michigan was the first pick in the second round of the 2005 draft, and the Niners anticipated that he would open the regular season as their starting right guard.

7/31/2005

Larry Allen, sfo

After failing his team conditioning test on Friday, Allen failed a physical on Saturday. The team continues to hope that Allen will get in playing shape soon, however no word has been issued to specifically point out what the problem is.

7/30/2005

Larry Allen, sfo

After failing a team conditioning test on Friday, Allen did not practice on Saturday and could be placed on the active-physically unable to perform (PUP) list by the Cowboys. Ironically, Allen had been praised by the Dallas coaching staff for his offseason work.

7/28/2005

David Baas, sfo

Baas has signed with the San Francisco 49ers, agreeing to a multiyear contract. The offensive lineman, who was the first pick of the second round in this year's NFL Draft out of Michigan, is expected to claim a spot in the Niners' starting lineup, likely at right guard.

7/26/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

Smith and the 49ers came to terms on a six-year deal on Monday that could be worth as much as $57 million with incentives. The contract is expected to be officially finalized and announced on Tuesday. This year's No. 1 overall pick will be guaranteed $24 million, which is $4 million more in guaranteed money than last year's No. 1 pick, Eli Manning, received from the Giants. The timing of the pact means that Smith will be able to report for the opening of training camp.

6/25/2005

Javin Hunter, sfo

Hunter was signed by the San Francisco 49ers on Friday. The wide receiver has not played in a regular season game since 2002, the same year he was drafted in the seventh round by the Baltimore Ravens.

6/21/2005

Johnnie Morton, sfo

Free Agent wide receiver Johnnie Morton signed with the 49ers on Tuesday, agreeing to a two-year deal for an undisclosed amount. The 11-year veteran was released by the Chiefs on June 2 after he refused to take a pay cut on his remaining $3 million salary.

Johnnie Morton, sfo

Free-agent wide receiver Johnnie Morton signed with the 49ers on Tuesday, agreeing to a two-year deal for an undisclosed amount. The 11-year veteran was released by the Chiefs on June 2 after he refused to take a pay cut on his remaining $3 million salary. The signing reunites Morton with San Francisco receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, who was Morton's position coach in Detroit for four seasons. Morton produced four 1,000-yard seasons from 1997-2001 for the Lions.

6/6/2005

Mark Roman, sfo

Roman will undergo tests on Monday to determine the extent of the knee injury he suffered while playing in Brett Favre's charity softball game over the weekend. The Packers' safety what hurt when he collided with another player while chasing a fly ball.

6/3/2005

Eric Heitmann, sfo

Heitmann has inked a four-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers. The offensive lineman, who was a seventh-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, started every game at left guard last season. He is expected to claim the job again in 2005, but could also see time at center if Jeremy Newberry is slow to recover from offseason knee surgery.

6/2/2005

Johnnie Morton, sfo

In a salary cap move, the Kansas City Chiefs have cut ties with Morton, waiving the veteran receiver on Thursday. Morton, who was scheduled to earn $3 million in 2005, spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions before playing for the Chiefs the last three. He finished the 2004 campaign with 55 catches for 795 yards and three touchdowns, but was limited to 13 games by a knee injury.

5/26/2005

Derrick Hamilton, sfo

Hamilton will undergo surgery next week after tearing a ligament in his left knee while running a route at the 49ers' training complex on Wednesday. Although head coach Mike Nolan said there is a chance the receiver could contribute late in the season, it is very possible he could miss the entire 2005 campaign.

5/21/2005

Jeremy Newberry, sfo

Newberry said Friday night that he will undergo arthrocopic surgery on his right knee May 31 in the hopes that this will allow him to play in the upcoming season. The center's right kneecap moved after he took part the team's mini-camp this month and swelled to twice its normal size.

5/20/2005

Jeremy Newberry, sfo

Newberry has been given several options to deal with a troublesome right knee that caused him to miss all but one game last season. The San Francisco center has been told by team physicians that he either can undergo full-blown surgery that will cause him to miss all of the 2005 campaign, or have a less invasive procedure that will keep him out of the first 5-6 games of the regular season, or try rest and rehab and see if that does the trick.

5/9/2005

Arnaz Battle, sfo

As it stands currently, Battle will go into training camp as the 49ers' No. 2 receiver, starting opposite Brandon Lloyd. The wideout, who was a sixth-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, appeared in 14 games last season, hauling in eight passes for 143 yards. He also saw time on special teams, averaging 19.8 yards on 13 kickoff returns and 8.6 yards on 31 punt returns, including one taken back for a touchdown.

5/7/2005

Alex Smith, sfo

While Mike Nolan is open to the idea of having Smith be his starting quarterback in 2005, the 49ers' head coach isn't going to just hand the job to the rookie. In the team's first mini-camp on Friday, Smith and Tim Rattay took the majority of the snaps at QB.

5/6/2005

Steve Bush, sfo

Bush has re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers, agreeing to a one-year contract. The tight end/fullback was with the Green Bay Packers in training camp last year, but was released just prior to the start of the regular season. He later inked with the Niners and finished the season with two catches for 10 yards and a touchdown in five games.

4/21/2005

Tom Rouen, sfo

Rouen has signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. The 12-year veteran averaged 42.0 yards on 26 punts in four games with the Seattle Mariners last season, but suffered a hamstring injury and missed the rest of the campaign.
