Donte Whitner
8/5/2006
Whitner signed with the Buffalo Bills Saturday, joining the team after missing the first eight days of training camp. The rookie and former Ohio State safety had been the top drafted player still unsigned and one of three first round selections not under contract. Whitner was the No. 8 NFL draft pick and was seeking a five-year contract with a $14 million guarantee. Whitner finished last season with 73 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions.

Whitner and the Bills are $1.1 million apart in negotiations to sign the No. 8 draft pick, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Bills' last offer included $12.9 million guaranteed on a five-year deal while Whitner is seeking closer to $14 million, the person told the AP, speaking on the condition of anonymity because negotiations are ongoing.
