Odell Thurman

7/26/2006

Thurman has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policies. Thurman became the team's starting middle linebacker as a rookie last season, when the Bengals made their first playoff appearance since 1990. Thurman was excused from the team's minicamp last month for personal reasons.

Thurman signed a five-year deal with the Bengals on Tuesday, ending his five-day holdout from training camp. The contract is worth a total of $4 million, with $2 million of that accounted for in his signing bonus. Cincinnati selected the linebacker out of Georgia in the second round of this year's draft. In two seasons with the Bulldogs, Thurman logged 9.5 sacks, 120 tackles and 66 assists. He also accounted for a pair of interceptions.
