Kevin Burnett

12/31/2005

Dallas put rookie Kevin Burnett on injured reserve Friday because of a torn knee ligament. The Cowboys' second-round pick suffered the injury during practice on Thursday. He is expected to be ready by training camp and perhaps even for some of the offseason training program. Burnett had five tackles, one assist and one sack in 13 games this season.

According to Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, Burnett will not play in Sunday's regular-season opener against the San Diego Chargers after his knee locked up on him during practice this week. The rookie linebacker, who was a second-round pick in this year's draft, will be re-evaluated to determine the extent of the injury, but Parcells estimated an absence of 1-3 weeks.

Burnett, the Cowboys' 2005 second-round draft pick, signed a five-year deal with Dallas on Saturday. Financial terms of the pact were not announced. The linebacker played five seasons at Tennessee, missing all but one game of the 2002 campaign with a knee injury. He finished his Volunteers career with 199 tackles, 75 assists and eight sacks in 49 games.
