Marcus Spears

7/30/2006

Spears tore cartilage in his right knee in the first workout of training camp Saturday and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday that will keep him out up to three weeks.

After missing nearly three weeks with a second-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, Spears has resumed practicing with the Dallas Cowboys. Although he likely won't play in this weekend's preseason matchup with the Houston Texans, the rookie defensive lineman should be ready for the start of the regular season.

Spears is scheduled to undergo tests to determine the extent of the knee injury he suffered during the Cowboys' practice Friday morning. The rookie defensive lineman, who was the 20th overall pick out of LSU in this year's NFL Draft, was taken to the locker room shortly after limping off the field. His status likely will be updated in the next day or two.

The 20th overall pick in the 2005 draft, Spears inked a five-year deal with the Cowboys on Sunday and joined his teammates in training camp. The contract is valued at $9.3 million, with $6.7 million of that figure guaranteed. Spears was the second of two first-round picks for the Cowboys, who selected Demarcus Ware with the No. 11 selection. In four seasons at LSU, Spears logged 19 sacks and four interceptions.
