1/4/2006
Merriman has been named as the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year for the 2005 NFL season. The Chargers' linebacker, who was the 12th overall pick in last year's draft, finished the campaign with 57 tackles, 10 sacks and two forced fumbles in 15 games.

Merriman did not work out with the Chargers on Thursday, due to a severe migraine headache that caused him to get a bloody nose and upset stomach. The Chargers' rookie linebacker, who's also recovering from minor surgery to repair a dislocated a bone in his left wrist, was feeling better later in the day, and he fully intends to be in the lineup for Sunday's meeting with the Buffalo Bills.

Merriman dislocated a bone in his left wrist in Sunday's win over the New York Jets and was forced to undergo surgery on Monday. The Chargers' rookie linebacker had pins inserted into the wrist during the procedure, but he is not expected to miss any game action. In eight contests this season, he has 28 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles.

The San Diego Chargers did not want to take any chances with Merriman's recovering knee, so they decided to hold him out of Sunday's regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. The rookie linebacker, who was the 12th overall pick in this year's draft, has been wearing a protective brace on his leg after spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee a couple of weeks ago. Barring any setbacks, he will see some game action in Week 2.

After practicing for two consecutive days without any problems, Merriman has been upgraded from questionable to probable on the Chargers' injury list. The rookie linebacker has been wearing a protective brace on his leg after spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee a couple of weeks ago. He was the 12th overall pick in this year's draft.

Limited by a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee over the last couple of weeks, Merriman was able to work out with the San Diego Chargers on Wednesday, sporting a protective brace on his leg. The rookie linebacker, who was the 12th overall pick in this year's draft, currently is listed as questionable on the Chargers' injury report, but he has vowed to play in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

According to Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer, Merriman has been diagnosed with a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury suffered in last Friday's exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings. The linebacker, who was the 12th overall pick in this year's draft, reportedly could miss at least two weeks.
8/27/2005
A left knee injury suffered on the opening kickoff of the Chargers' preseason game at Minnesota led to linebacker Shawne Merriman spending the rest of the game on the sidelines. While Merriman did not feel the sprain was serious, offering to go back into the game, the Chargers did not want to take any chances with their 2005 first-round pick.
8/17/2005
After missing nearly a week of practice with a strained hamstring, Merriman has returned to action with the Chargers. Barring any setbacks, the rookie linebacker, who was the 12th overall pick in this year's draft, should see some time in Sunday's exhibition game against the St. Louis Rams.
8/1/2005
Merriman agreed to terms with the Chargers on Monday on a five-year deal that is worth as much as $15.73 million, with $9 million of that total guaranteed. The contract means that the linebacker out of Maryland can report to training camp, where his rookie teammates have been at work for the past week. The first of two San Diego first-round picks in the 2005 draft, Merriman was the 12th player taken off the big board in April.
5/7/2005
Merriman, who has been advised by his agents to skip San Diego's minicamp, was called out by linebacker Steve Foley, who said the rookie needed to be in the camp to avoid falling behind his teammates.
