Troy Williamson

6/21/2006

Williamson practiced for the first time in more than two months on Tuesday after being sidelined with a skin abscess on his left hip that required surgery. The Vikings' wide receiver was cleared last Friday and is now trying to get back in shape and make up for the time he lost during his recovery. Williamson was participating in Minnesota's first minicamp in April when he developed the abscess, which stemmed from third-degree burns he sustained as a child.

Williamson will be inactive for Sunday's matchup with the Detroit Lions. The rookie receiver, who was the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, currently is buried on the team's depth chart behind Travis Taylor, Koren Robinson, Marcus Robinson and Nate Burleson.

With Nate Burleson sidelined with a knee injury, Williamson was more involved in the Vikings' offensive attack in Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints. The rookie receiver, who was the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, finished with three catches for 83 yards and the first touchdown of his NFL career.

After sitting out the Vikings' preseason opener with a foot impingement, Williamson made his debut in the second half of Friday's game against the New York Jets. And he made a stong impression with two catches, including a 54-year touchdown grab.

Williamson had the boot removed from his right foot earlier this week and has been practicing with the Vikings over the past couple of days without any problems. The rookie receiver, who was the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, missed the team's first exhibition game with an ankle injury, but he hopes to see some time in Friday night's preseason meeting with the New York Jets.

Williamson was sporting a walking boot on his right foot Wednesday afternoon after injuring his ankle during practice the previous evening. A precautionary MRI on the ankle revealed no structural damage, and the Vikings have listed the rookie receiver as day-to-day. Williamson, the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, is questionable for Friday's exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Williamson came to terms on a rookie contract with the Vikings on Sunday afternoon that reportedly covers seven years and is worth as much as $32 million over the life of the deal. The deal comes with $13.3 million in guaranteed money and almost certainly includes language that allows it to be voided after five years. Minnesota selected Williamson with the first of the club's two first-round choices in this year's draft.
