Cedric Benson
8/5/2006
Benson left Chicago Bears practice late Friday on a cart after injuring his left shoulder. Bears coach Lovie Smith said more would be known Saturday after X-rays were taken. The Bears' running back had his arm and shoulder in a sling as he was taken from Ward Field at Olivet Nazarene University.

After missing six weeks of action because of a sprained right ankle, Benson practiced with the Chicago Bears all week this week. If his ankle holds up, the fourth-overall pick in last summer's draft could see plenty of action with a playoff spot secured. Benson hasn't carried the ball more than 16 times in a game during his rookie year. His 79 yards at New Orleans on Nov. 6 are his highest total. He hasn't found the end zone while running for 237 yards in eight games.

Benson will continue to expand his involvement at practice this week, and barring any setbacks, he will be available for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, according to Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner. The rookie running back has been sidelined since Week 10 with a sprained right knee. In eight contests this season, he has 237 yards on 58 carries, but has yet to find the end zone.

Benson was able to participate in portions of the Chicago Bears' practice on Wednesday, but he still remains listed as questionable on the team's injury report. The rookie running back, who has been sidelined since Week 10 with a sprained right knee, likely will be a game-time decision for Sunday's battle with the Green Bay Packers. In eight contests this season, he has 237 yards on 58 carries, but has yet to find the end zone.
12/1/2005
Benson is still at least a couple weeks away from returning to the Bears' backfield, but his sprained right knee has improved enough for him to resume straight-forward light running, but he has yet to attempt any cuts. The rookie running back, who has been sidelined since Week 10, will continue to receive treatment on a daily basis. In eight games this season, Benson has 237 yards on 58 carries.
11/14/2005
An MRI on Benson's injured right knee has confirmed the original diagnosis of a sprained medial collateral ligament. The Bears rookie running back, who went down in the second quarter of Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to be sidelined for the next 3-6 weeks. In eight games this season, Benson has 237 yards on 58 carries.

Thomas Jones, shelved with bruised ribs, will not play today, so Benson will get his first NFL start when the Bears host the San Francisco 49ers.
11/9/2005
With Thomas Jones leaving early after aggravating his bruised ribs, Benson got some extra work in Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints and turned in the best outing of his NFL career. The Bears' rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, picked up 79 yards on 14 carries.
10/16/2005
Benson's first career start appears to be on hold, as both FOX and ESPN are reporting that Jones will start against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Bears' rookie still may get more carries than he has seen in his first three games, as Jones was walking around practice with a noticeable limp on Friday. Benson has 24 carries, 65 yards and a 2.7 yards-per-carry average in his first three NFL contests.
10/11/2005
Tests on Thomas Jones' right knee have revealed ligament damage, and he'll likely be forced to miss at least Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. If that is the case, Benson will step into the Bears' starting lineup, according to head coach Lovie Smith. The rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, has had a tough time getting into the offensive mix so far this season, due to the solid play of Jones.
10/7/2005
Benson continues to work his way into the Bears' offensive mix slowly, but don't expect him to take over as the starting tailback any time soon. According to head coach Lovie Smith, Thomas Jones will continue to get the majority of the touches out of the backfield, with the rookie and No. 4 overall pick seeing spot carries as the primary backup. Benson has rushed just 19 times this season, picking up 59 yards.
9/26/2005
Not only did Benson fail to record a carry, but he didn't make it on to the field at all in Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The rookie running back has been battling for playing time in the Bears' offensive attack, but the solid play of veteran Thomas Jones has limited his action. Jones has topped 100 yards rushing in each of his last two games.
9/19/2005
After getting just three carries in last week's season opener, Benson saw an increased role in Sunday's victory over the Detroit Lions, picking up 49 yards on 16 rushes. The Bears' rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, continues to serve as the primary backup to veteran Thomas Jones.
9/8/2005
Although nothing has been made official at this point, it appears Benson should see some time in Sunday's 2005 season opener against the Washington Redskins. The rookie running back, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, missed the first 36 days of training camp in a holdout and has yet to digest the Bears' entire playbook. He's currently third on the depth chart behind Thomas Jones and Adrian Peterson.
8/29/2005
Benson has agreed to a five-year deal with the Bears and will begin practicing immediately. The deal ends a 36-day holdout, the longest by a Bears rookie in franchise history. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
8/27/2005
In a surprise move, Cedric Benson visited Bears practice on Thursday and had a 45-minute meeting with general manager Jerry Angelo. The two met without Benson's agent present in an effort to open the lines of communication. The meeting ended without a signed deal.
8/18/2005
Benson still hasn't agreed to terms on a contract -- the last 2005 draft pick yet to sign. According to general manager Jerry Angelo, the Chicago Bears have made their final offer to the fourth overall pick, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons with the Texas Longhorns.
7/24/2005
Benson, the No. 4 pick in this year's draft, will not be on the field when the Bears hold their first official training-camp practice of the 2005 season on Sunday. The running back out of Texas has yet to sign with the team, and he likely won't ink a deal until several other '05 first-rounders come to terms with their respective clubs.
