Chris Perry
12/30/2005
Perry practiced at full speed on Thursday for the first time since spraining his left ankle in a Week 14 win over the Cleveland Browns. The second-year running back reported no problems following the workout, prompting the Bengals to upgrade him from doubtful to questionable on the injury report for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Perry already has been ruled out of Saturday's matchup with the Buffalo Bills, due to a sprained left ankle. The injury, suffered in a Week 14 win over the Cleveland Browns, prevented him from serving as Rudi Johnson's primary backup in the Bengals' backfield last weekend. He hopes to be ready for the start of the playoffs.

All tests on Perry's sprained left ankle were negative, but he had his foot in a protective boot at the Bengals' practice facilities on Monday, a day after suffering the injury in a win over the Cleveland Browns. Reportedly, there is a good chance the running back could miss the rest of the regular season, but he hopes to be available for the start of the playoffs. For now, he is considered week-to-week.

Perry left Sunday's victory over Cleveland in the first quarter after he sprained his left ankle. The Bengals' running back did not return and was on crutches after the game. He wound up with three carries for 15 yards on the afternoon.

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to expand Perry's role in the offensive attack, especially in passing situations. The second-year running back, who was the 26th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, currently leads all players at his position with 27 receptions on the season. In six games, he's rushed for 149 yards on 32 carries -- a 4.7-yard average.

Nursing soreness in his hamstring, Perry will be limited in practice early this week as a precautionary measure. The Bengals' backup running back plans to be available for Sunday's meeting with the Houston Texans, however. He will be listed as probable.

Because regular starter Rudi Johnson recently broke a team rule, Perry will get the starting nod for the Bengals in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Cleveland Browns. The second-year running back, who was limited to just two games last season by abdominal, groin and hamstring problems, should see more touches than might have been planned originally.
