Smith has been released by the San Francisco 49ers, opening a spot on the roster for fellow tight end Terry Jones, whoh was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday. After missing his first two NFL campaigns with a broken leg, Smith returned this season to haul in three passes for seven yards in five games, including two starts.

With regular starter Eric Johnson still sidelined with a foot injury, the 49ers have decided to give Smith a shot at filling the void at tight end, beginning with this week's meeting with the Dallas Cowboys. Smith, who was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month, was inactive for the Niners' first two games of the 2005 campaign, but has been working out with the first-team offense in practice this week.
