Onterrio Smith
4/26/2006
Smith was released by the Vikings on Wednesday following a 2005 season in which he didn't play due to a suspension for a substance abuse violation.

Smith has been suspended for the entire 2005 campaign by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy for the third time -- a specific reason was not released. The Vikings already excused the running back from the rest of their offseason program after he was found with a kit used to beat drug tests at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on April 21. Smith was suspended for four games last season after picking up his second strike.

According to the team's vice president of football operations, the Vikings have no immediate plans to release Smith. This despite reports that say the running back has been informed by NFL officials that he is facign a one-year suspension for missing a league-administered drug test. By rule, Smith would have five days to appeal any suspension. The Vikings already excused Smith from the rest of their offseason program after he was found with a kit used to beat drug tests.

Smith has been excused from the rest of the Vikings' offseason workout program, and a timetable for his return has not been set, according to head coach Mike Tice. Although no details were disclosed, his departure likely has something to do with his recent off-field problems. The running back was detained for a short period of time by police at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on April 21 after they found a kit used to beat drug tests in his possession.

Smith was detained for a short period of time by police at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on April 21 after they found a kit used to beat drug tests in his possession. The kit contained several items, including vials of white powder that Smith told police was "dried urine for making a clean urine test." The Minnesota running back claimed that he was taking the vials to his cousin. Smith led the Vikings with 124 carries and 544 rushing yards in 2004.
