Dirk Johnson
4/27/2006
Johnson, a restricted free agent, signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia on Thursday. The 30-year-old punter played in seven games for the Eagles last season before being placed on injured reserve for a sports hernia. Johnson, who played in all 32 games for Philadelphia in 2003 and 2004, averaged 38.4 yards per punt last season.

Johnson's 2005 campaign has come to an end, as the Philadelphia Eagles have placed him on injured reserve, due to his nagging groin problems. In his absence, Reggie Hodges will handle the punting duties for the club going forward.

Johnson was held out the entire preseason after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia earlier this summer. The Eagles' punter appears to be close to full strength, and he plans to be available for Monday night's regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Johnson is expected to miss six weeks after having surgery for a sports hernia on Friday. That leaves the Eagles with just one punter, Mark Mariscal, on the roster. But since Mariscal has never punted in a NFL game, look for the team to try and sign a veteran, pehaps ex-Eagle Sean Landetta.
