David Carr
2/10/2006
The Houston Texans extended Carr's contract for three seasons Friday. The Texans initially had the option of extending their quarterback and former No. 1 NFL draft pick's contract for two seasons. "David Carr is the person who can take us to the Super Bowl," Texans owner Bob McNair said.

Carr left with a right elbow injury suffered during the Texans' 20-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The 26-year-old quarterback completed 4 of 11 passes for just 23 yards to finish the season with 2,488 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His quarterback rating of 77.2 was the second highest of his four-year career. He posted an 83.5 rating a year ago.

Carr turned in a season-high 116.4 passer rating in Sunday's meeting with the St. Louis Rams, but his performance wasn't enough, as the Texans squandered their lead and eventually lost in overtime, 33-27. The quarterback finished the contest 25 of 34 for 293 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He had failed to throw for more than one TD in any of his previous 10 games this season.

Carr posted the second-worst passer rating of his NFL career in Sunday's season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills, finishing with a dismal 12.1 mark. The Texans' quarterback went 9 of 21 for 70 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. He also was sacked five times and lost a fumble.

Carr has been bothered by some soreness in his Achilles this week, and as a precautionary measure, the Texans have held him out of practice the last couple of days. According to head coach Dom Capers, the ailment is minor, and the quarterback should be back under center shortly. He has yet to be ruled out of Saturday's exhibition game against the Oakland Raiders.
