Rod Smart

3/1/2006

Smart was released by the Panthers in an effort to get the team under the salary cap for the upcoming season. The running back/kick returner's release clears around $700,000 off the salary cap. The five-year veteran joined running back Stephen Davis and defensive tackle Brenston Buckner in getting released by the Panthers.

Smart, who missed last weekend's meeting with the Arizona Cardinals due to a strained groin, did not practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday and currently is listed as doubtful for Sunday's tussle with the Detroit Lions. The running back sees the majority of his playing time on special teams. He has just three carries this season.
