The Minnesota Vikings agreed Tuesday to a contract with Smith, a sixth-year NFL veteran who was released by the New Orleans Saints last week. Smith is expected to compete with free agent signee Tank Williams for a starting safety spot next to Darren Sharper.

The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office will not press charges against Smith, who allegedly pulled a pellet gun on two fans who approached his car outside a fast-food restaurant in March. Smith was arrested for the incident, and initially charged with aggravated assault with a weapon. However, authorities could not determine whether Smith was actually the person holding the gun. In 2003, the safety pleaded guilty to pulling a gun on a motorist.
