Will Peterson
12/7/2005
Sidelined since Week 3 after aggravating a back problem, Peterson has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Giants, ending his 2005 campaign. The cornerback was diagnosed with "hot spots" in his lower back, areas that could develop into stress fractures. He missed 11 games in 2003 with a stress fracture in the same general areas.

According to Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, Peterson's back injury does not appear as serious as first thought, but the cornerback will be sidelined for at least 4-6 weeks. After consulting with several specialists, Peterson has been diagnosed with "hot spots" in his lower back, areas that could develop into stress fractures. He missed 11 games in 2003 with a stress fracture in his back.

An MRI has revealed that Peterson has a non-displaced fracture of his lower back, and the Giants have listed him as doubtful for Sunday's matchup with the St. Louis Rams. The cornerback plans to seek another opinion from a specialist, but admitted that the injury might force him to miss the rest of the 2005 campaign.

Peterson returned to practice with the New York Giants on Tuesday after missing more than two weeks with a slightly sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. The cornerback will be re-evaluated later in the week to determine exactly how much he'll be able to contribute in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, if at all.

Further tests on Peterson's left knee have revealed nothing more than a sprained medial collateral ligament, but the injury will prevent him from playing in Friday's exhibition game against the New York Jets. The Giants have listed the cornerback as week-to-week and are optimistic that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Peterson was forced to leave Saturday's exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers after spraining his left knee in the first quarter. The Giants' starting cornerback will be re-evaluated over the next couple of days to determine the extent of the injury.
