Steve Smith

8/11/2006

Smith will miss the Carolina Panthers' exhibition opener against Buffalo on Saturday. Smith, the NFL's leading receiver last season, missed his 13th straight day of training camp Friday with a strained left hamstring.

Despite returning to practice on Monday, Smith isn't expected to play in the team's exhibition opener on Saturday. The Panthers receiver went through agility drills and catching balls as he tries to rebound from a hamstring injury.

Smith missed practice Sunday, a day after he strained his left hamstring while running a route at training camp. Coach John Fox said Smith, who missed the final week of coaching sessions in June with tightness in the same hamstring, is listed as day-to-day.

Smith was carted off the field Saturday with a hamstring injury on the opening day of training camp. Midway through the afternoon session, Smith pulled up while running a long route down the left sideline. He immediately clutched his left hamstring, took a couple of steps and fell to the ground.

The Seattle Seahawks did a solid job in limiting Smith's offensive contribution in Sunday's NFC Championship. The Panthers' receiver, who had hauled in nine or more passes in each of his previous three games, finished the loss with just five catches for 33 yards and no touchdowns. He did make his presence felt on special teams, however, returning a punt 59 yards for a score.

Smith had a big day against the Chicago Bears Sunday, catching 12 passes for 218 yards and two scores. The Panthers' wide receiver caught touchdowns of 58 and 39 yards from quarterback Jake Delhomme, and the 39-yarder late in the third quarter gave the Panthers a 23-14 lead.

Smith scored two touchdowns in Saturday's 23-0 playoff win over the New York Giants. The Panthers' wide receiver had 10 receptions for 84 yards and one touchdown and rushed for a 12-yard TD. Smith's performance came the same week he was named Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year, along with New England's Tedy Bruschi. Smith missed all but one game last season with a broken leg.

Smith and New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi received the same number of votes and will share the honors of the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award, announced on Thursday. The Panthers' fifth-year wideout, who was limited to just one game last season by a broken leg, finished the 2005 campaign with a league-high 1,563 yards, while tying for first in receptions (103) and touchdowns (12).

Smith has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his actions in Saturday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Upset after getting no flag after being tackled out of bounds in the third quarter, the receiver made "impermissible contact with a game official," which resulted in him being ejected from the contest.

12/24/2005

Smith was ejected in the third quarter of Saturday's game against the Dallas Cowboys after apparently grabbing an official. The receiver was upset after receiving no flag after being tackled out of bounds. Before being ejected, Smith had had just one catch for 18 yards in this game.

12/12/2005

Smith turned in his eighth 100-yard outing of the 2005 campaign in Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hauling in five passes for 103 yards. The Panthers' receiver currently leads the NFL in receptions (87) and receiving yardage (1,329) this season. He's also tied for second with 10 receiving touchdowns.

11/21/2005

Making up for a three-catch outing in last weekend's win over the New York Jets, Smith was the lone bright spot for the Panthers' offense in Sunday's 13-3 loss to the Chicago Bears, hauling in a career-high 14 passes for 169 yards. The receiver has now topped the century mark in seven of 10 games this season.

11/7/2005

Smith topped the 100-yard mark for the sixth time in eight games this season and found the end zone for the fourth consecutive contest, finishing Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with five catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. The Panthers' receiver also averaged 20.5 yards on two punt returns.

10/31/2005

Smith turned in the best performance of his NFL career, hauling in 11 passes for a franchise-best 201 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 38-13 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The Panthers' receiver has been nearly unstoppable this season, as he's topped the century mark in five of his seven games. He has at least one touchdown in each of his last three contests.

10/17/2005

Smith continues to produce for the Carolina Panthers. The receiver has topped the century mark in four of six games this season, including a six-catch, 123-yard performance in Sunday's victory over the Detroit Lions. He also found the end zone for an 80-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

10/10/2005

After being limited to just two catches in last week's win over the Green Bay Packers, Smith got back in the swing of things in Sunday's 24-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The receiver led the Panthers with eight catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns, including a 65-yard score in the second quarter.

9/26/2005

Smith had the best game of his NFL career in Sunday's meeting with the Miami Dolphins, but despite the performance, the Panthers came up just short, losing the game, 27-24. The receiver hauled in 11 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns -- all three totals were career highs.

9/12/2005

Seeing his first regular-season game action in nearly a year, Smith showed why his services were missed by the Panthers in 2004. The receiver, who was limited to just one contest last season by a broken leg, hauled in eight passes for 138 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's season-opening loss to the New Orleans Saints.

4/30/2005

Smith is participating in Carolina's three-day mini-camp this weekend, his first on-field action since breaking his leg in the first week of the 2004 season.
