Fred Smoot

12/9/2005

Although he won't be in the starting lineup, Smoot is slated to return to action in Sunday's meeting with the St. Louis Rams. The Vikings' cornerback originally was diagnosed with a sprained shoulder after going down against the Carolina Panthers on October 30. He then aggravated the problem a week later in a win over the Detroit Lions and further tests revealed a broken collarbone. He has been sidelined since.

Further tests have revealed that Smoot has a broken right collarbone, an injury that will keep him sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks, according to Vikings head coach Mike Tice. The cornerback originally was diagnosed with a sprained shoulder after going down against the Carolina Panthers on October 30, then aggravated the problem in last Sunday's win over the Detroit Lions. He has 34 tackles and an interception in eight games this season.

Smoot was forced to leave late in Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers after suffering a sprained right shoulder. The Vikings' cornerback will undergo a precautionary MRI on Monday to rule out any serious damage, according to head coach Mike Tice. For the time being, he has been listed as day-to-day.

Smoot aggravated his sore right knee during the Vikings' practice on Monday and is expected to skip Friday's preseason finale as a precautionary measure. The cornerback, who also missed some time early in camp with a strained neck, will be shut down until next Monday, according to head coach Mike Tice, but he plans to be in the starting lineup when the team takes the field to begin the regular season.

After missing time with a strained neck and sore right knee, Smoot has returned to practice with the Minnesota Vikings this week, working out with the first-team defense. The veteran cornerback did not play in the team's first two preseason contests, but he plans to make his debut against the San Diego Chargers on Friday.

Smoot has been sidelined since injuring his right knee during an intrasquad scrimmage last Tuesday, but he should return to the field shortly after an MRI revealed no structural damage on Monday. The Vikings have listed the veteran cornerback as day-to-day. He missed some time early in camp with a strained neck as well, but has since recovered from that ailment.

Smoot plans to be ready for the start of the regular season, but he will not play in Friday's exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs after suffering soft tissue damage in his right knee at practice on Tuesday. The Vikings' cornerback, who inked a six-year, $34 million contract during the offseason, also has been limited in camp by a strained neck. He is listed as day-to-day.
