Backus agreed to terms on a six-year deal with the Lions and is expected to sign the contract Friday. The Lions and Backus agreed to a one-year offer in May after they designated him the team's franchise player, but both sides kept working on a new deal that would keep him in Detroit for years to come.

Backus on Monday agreed to the one-year offer he received when designated the Lions' franchise player in February, meaning he will be paid $6.98 million in 2006 or the average of the five top-paid players at his position from the previous season.
