The Green Bay Packers have claimed Gardner off waivers from the Carolina Panthers. The receiver, who was the 15th overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, was acquired from the Washington Redskins last summer, but failed to make an impact with the Panthers, eventually leading to his release. In 10 games this season, he has just nine catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Without a catch since Week 11, Gardner has been waived by the Carolina Panthers. The receiver, who was acquired from the Washington Redskins in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick over the summer, failed to make an impact with his new club, hauling in nine passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. He will be replaced on the roster by fullback Casey Cramer, promoted from the practice squad on Friday.

Despite being healthy, Gardner has been declared inactive for Sunday's regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Ricky Proehl will serve as the Panthers' top backup to starters Steve Smith and Keary Colbert, while special teams captain Karl Hankton could see additional playing time on offense as well.

Trying to move Gardner all offseason, the Washington Redskins finally found a taker, dealing the receiver to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. In 16 games last season, the 15th overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft hauled in 51 passes for 650 yards and five touchdowns.

The Redskins and Gardner have agreed that the wideout will not attend the team's mandatory minicamp that begins on Friday. The team is expected to release the four-year veteran in the coming weeks, if they are not first able to work out a last-minute trade with a club in need of help at the position. A first-round draft pick by Washington in 2001, Gardner caught 71 passes for 1,006 yards and eight touchdowns in 2002, but he has been disappointing the past two years.

It looks like Gardner is a longshot to return to the Washington Redskins, as Joe Gibbs was quoted in Thursday's Washington Post that he was "skeptical" about the receiver being on the team in 2005.
