Unable to get back to full strength after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in his right knee, Morton has been released by the New England Patriots. The running back/kick returner spent the majority of training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

The Patriots signed Morton to a one-year deal on Tuesday, less than three weeks after the kick-return specialist was released by the Redskins. The deal reportedly worth a base salary of $600,000 with another $600,000 possible in incentives. In five NFL seasons with three different teams (Saints, Jets, Redskins), Morton has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns and also logged one receiving score.

Creating about $540,000 in salary cap space, the Washington Redskins released Morton on Friday. The running back/kick returner, who inked a five-year, $8 million contract before the 2003 campaign, was limited to just six games last season, due to knee problems.
