Chad Pennington

8/19/2006

The Jets don?t expect to have Pennington at quarterback when they visit the Redskins on Saturday for their second preseason game. Pennington left Jets? camp on Thursday to attend to a family illness and has an excused absence. Pennington is expected to miss a few days of practice and return next week.

8/17/2006

Pennington was excused from practice Thursday for personal reasons and his status for this weekend's preseason game against Washington is uncertain. Coach Eric Mangini said Pennington left because of a family illness. He wouldn't say whether Pennington would travel to Washington with the team Friday or play against the Redskins on Saturday.

8/12/2006

Pennington played in his first game since undergoing a second major operation on his right shoulder in the New York Jets preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The seven-year vet was 9-for-14 for 54 yards. He also fumbled once.

6/16/2006

The New York Jets reportedly have Pennington on a pitch count during minicamp as he's continued rehabbing from a right shoulder injury. The Jets quarterback played just three games last season before re-injuring his right shoulder and undergoing surgery. "Right now am I where I want to be? Absolutely not," he said. "But I understand the long process of getting back and my whole goal is to come back strong for training camp and be ready."

3/6/2006

Pennington has agreed to a restructured contract with the New York Jets. The quarterback had an eight-year contract worth $64 million and was due $9 million in 2006. If Pennington did not restructure the contract and the Jets waived him, he would have cost the team $12 million against the 2006 salary cap.

2/14/2006

The New York Jets are reportedly attempting to renegotiate Pennington's contract. The Jets' quarterback missed much of the last two seasons because of an injured throwing shoulder. He was injured in the third game of last season, had rotator cuff surgery and missed the remainder of the season.

1/3/2006

Dr. James Andrews repaired damage to the rotator cuff, anterior capsule and labrum in Pennington's ailing right shoulder in October, the second major shoulder surgery the Jets' quarterback underwent in less than a year. According to head coach Herman Edwards, even if Pennington has fully recovered from the procedures by training camp, he is not guaranteed the team's starting job in 2006.

12/27/2005

According to Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, there is no guarantee that Pennington will be ready for the start of training camp next summer. The quarterback continues to recover from his second major shoulder injury in the last year and likely will miss most of the team's offseason minicamps and workouts. Dr. James Andrews repaired damage to the rotator cuff, anterior capsule and labrum in Pennington's ailing right shoulder in October.

10/7/2005

During an arthroscopic procedure on Thursday, Dr. James Andrews repaired damage to the rotator cuff, anterior capsule and labrum in Pennington's ailing right shoulder. The Jets' quarterback had been holding out slim hope that he could return to action this season, but after undergoing the surgery, that will not happen, as he will be sidelined indefinitely. The club is optimistic that Pennington will be fully recovered by the start of the 2006 campaign.

9/28/2005

Although he's still expected to miss the rest of the 2005 season, Pennington will not be placed on injured reserve immediately by the New York Jets. After reviewing the results of a second MRI, Dr. James Andrews determined that the quarterback's shoulder injury is not as serious as first thought. Pennington does have damage to his rotator cuff, but he will take a couple weeks off before being re-evaluated to determine the next course of action.

9/27/2005

Pennington will travel to Alabama this week to get a second opinion on his injured right shoulder, but according to sources within the Jets' organization, tests have revealed that the quarterback has a torn rotator cuff. If Andrews agrees with the original diagnosis, Pennington will be forced to undergo surgery yet again and will miss the rest of the 2005 campaign. He's gone 49 of 83 for 530 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in three games this season.

9/26/2005

Pennington will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the shoulder injury he suffered in Sunday's overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jets' quarterback was knocked out early in the second half, but was forced to return to the lineup after backup Jay Fielder went down with a shoulder problem as well. For now, he has been listed as day-to-day.

9/12/2005

Pennington completed 21 of his 34 pass attempts for 264 yards in Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, but he was unable to lead the Jets on a scoring drive. The quarterback was intercepted once, got sacked three times and fumbled a career-high six times, losing two. He fumbled five times all of last season (13 games).

8/15/2005

Pennington has declared himself 90-95 percent healthy, and if he continues to progress over the next several days, he hopes to see some time under center in Friday's preseason matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The Jets' starting quarterback, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, was scheduled to throw at both of the team's practices on Monday for the first time since the procedure.

8/10/2005

Pennington continues to work his shoulder back into playing shape, and as a precautionary measure, the Jets plan to keep him out of Friday's exhibition game against the Detroit Lions. The quarterback, who missed all of the team's offseason workouts while recovering from surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, is expected to be ready by the start of the regular season.

8/6/2005

Pennington was held out of practice for the second time in three days on Friday in order to rest his throwing shoulder.

7/31/2005

Pennington threw for the first time in front of an audience, since his surgery, on Saturday. Over 1,500 spectators watched as the Jet quarterback took snaps, and threw without any setbacks. Although Pennington's longest pass reached only about 30 yards, he was reported as saying that this was the first camp practice in three years where he felt no pain afterwards. Immediately following the session, trainers wrapped his shoulder in ice.

7/21/2005

Pennington said he will be at about 85 percent when the Jets report to training camp later this month, and he should be able to take part in most drills during the team's workouts. Barring any setbacks, he plans to be back to 100 percent by the start of the 2005 regular season. The quarterback has been recovering since undergoing surgery to repair his torn right rotator cuff nearly five months ago.

6/16/2005

Four months after undergoing surgery to repair his torn right rotator cuff, Pennington has begun throwing again. The Jets' starting quarterback reportedly is throwing about 80 passes every other day, and the team still anticipates that he will be able to fully participate in practices once camp opens on July 29. Pennington finished last year with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions, but he played New York's last seven games with the rotator-cuff tear.

6/11/2005

Pennington has been unable to participate in any throwing drills during the New York Jets' offseason training sessions. The quarterback had rotator-cuff surgery in February, but still is expecting to be ready once the regular season opens.

4/30/2005

Pennington, who is recovering from off-season rotator cuff surgery, has guaranteed he will be ready for the 2005 season opener. The quarterback is expected to be cleared to resume throwing sometime in June.
