Jerry Azumah

12/24/2005

Azumah missed Friday's practice with a pulled hamstring and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers. If he can't go, Rashied Davis or Bernard Berrian would become the primary kick returner while Mike Green would take Azumah's spot as the nickel back.

Although he's not quite back to 100 percent after undergoing hip surgery early last month, Azumah has been practicing with the Chicago Bears all week and has reported no major problems. As a result, the cornerback is listed as probable on the team's injury report, and he is expected to be in the lineup for Sunday's season opener against the Washington Redskins, barring any setbacks.

Azumah did some light work prior to the Bears' practice on Monday, and he plans to resume full-speed workouts within the next week. According to head coach Lovie Smith, the team expects Azumah to be in the starting lineup for Chicago's Week 1 battle against the Washington Redskins. The defensive back has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip earlier this month.

Azumah is expected to undergo arthroscopic hip surgery on Wednesday, and the Bears' starting cornerback could be sidelined for up to four weeks. Last year, Azumah missed most of training camp and the first four games of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a neck vertebra. The veteran is entering his seventh season with Chicago, and he has started 37 games over the past three years. Azumah has picked off four passes in each of the past two campaigns.
