Aaron Brooks

3/23/2006

Brooks lands in Oakland. His stay ended in New Orleans when the Saints signed free-agent quarterback Drew Brees. Brooks will likely start for the Raiders, who have released Kerry Collins. Brooks signed a two-year deal worth $8 million, including a $1.5 million bonus, with Oakland.

Primarily due to his inconsistency this season, Brooks has been benched by the New Orleans Saints, as the team has decided to give backup Todd Bouman the starting nod in Sunday's matchup with the Carolina Panthers. Brooks has completed just 55.7 percent of his pass attempts in 13 games on the year, recording 13 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He's also scored twice on the ground, but been sacked 33 times.

After posting a season-best 136.1 passer rating in last week's win over the New York Jets, Brooks looked like a totally different player in Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Saints' quarterback finished the day 18 of 34 for 215 yards and tied a career-high with four interceptions. He failed to throw a touchdown pass.

Brooks notched a season-best 136.1 passer rating in Sunday's meeting with the New York Jets, leading the Saints to a 21-19 victory. The quarterback completed 17 of his 23 attempts for just 181 yards, but connected for three touchdowns and did not have an interception. He has six TDs over his last three games after tossing six in his first eight contests combined.

Attempting to get the Saints back in the game, Brooks finished Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots with a season-high 50 pass attempts. The quarterback completed 27 for 343 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 30 yards on three carries. With the performance, Brooks now has 116 career touchdown passes, breaking the club record formerly held by Archie Manning.

Failing to get the Saints' offense on track, Brooks was pulled from the lineup in the third quarter of Sunday's 52-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers and replaced by backup Todd Bouman. Prior to his departure, Brooks was just 9 of 22 for 146 yards and two interceptions. His 25.9 passer rating was the lowest of his NFL career as a starter.

Despite passing for 375 yards -- the third-best total in his NFL career -- Brooks struggled trying to get the Saints back into Monday night's meeting with the New York Giants. The quarterback connected with Joe Horn for one touchdowns, but threw three interceptions, was sacked four times and lost a fumble in a 27-10 loss.
