Porter is expected to have arthroscopic knee surgery as early as Wednesday, less than a year after having loose cartilage removed from his left knee. The Pittsburgh Steelers did not disclose which of their star linebacker's knees requires surgery.

Porter has been practicing without incident this week, and the Steelers expect him to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's season-opener against the Tennessee Titans. The linebacker missed more than a month after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in early August to remove some loose cartilage from his knee.

Porter hopes to be ready for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Tennessee Titans after returning to practice with the Steelers on Monday for the first time in nearly a month. The linebacker underwent arthroscopic surgery in early August to remove some loose cartilage from knee and has been sidelined since. He'll be evaluated on a daily basis.

On Wednesday, Porter underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove some loose cartilage from his ailing knee. The Steelers' linebacker is expected to be sidelined for about a month, but barring any setbacks, he should be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Bill Cowher. Porter suffered the injury during practice on Tuesday.
