Doug Flutie

5/15/2006

Flutie announced his retirement Monday after 21 years in professional football. The former Heisman Trophy winner, who threw one of the most famous passes in college football history while at Boston College, spent 12 seasons in the NFL and also played in the U.S. Football League and the Canadian Football League.

Flutie is expected to announce this week if he will retire or return for his 21st season in pro football. The 43-year-old New England quarterback said he's spoken to many teams, as well as to networks about broadcasting. "I'm just going to take my time to make my decision," Flutie said Monday, and indicated he would not want to play for a team other than the Patriots. "I love being home."

Flutie drop-kicked the ball through the uprights for the extra point on a fourth-quarter touchdown in New England's loss to Miami Sunday. The Patriots' 43-year-old backup quarterback, who will always be known for his 48-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to lead Boston College to a last-second win over the University of Miami, executed the first dropkick extra point in the NFL since 1941.

Overall, Flutie has looked solid in the Patriots' preseason workouts, and it appears he is currently is the favorite to win the job at Tom Brady's primary backup this season. The veteran quarterback, who turns 43 in October, took over after Brady exited Thursday's exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints, completing three of four pass attempts for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Flutie, who was released by the San Diego Chargers last month, has agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots, his agent announced on Friday. The 42-year-old quarterback has completed 54.7 percent of his passes for 14,686 yards, 86 TDs and 68 INTs in 86 career games. In addition, he's rushed for 1,627 yards and 10 TDs.
