Matt Birk
8/31/2005
Birk has been placed on injured reserve by the Minnesota Vikings, officially ending his 2005 campaign. The center is scheduled to undergo surgery in the near future to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, which will require at least three months of recovery time. In the last year, Birk has had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, as well as three sports hernia operations.

Birk would have played through a torn labrum in his left hip -- with the help of painkillers -- if the Minnesota Vikings would have guaranteed his contract for the 2006 season. However, the team has turned down the request, and the starting center has decided to undergo surgery to correct the problem, according to his agent. He is expected to be sidelined for at least three months, which could force the Vikings to place him on injured reserve.

Birk might be forced to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, which would force him to miss the entire 2005 campaign. The Vikings' starting center, who had the same procedure on his left hip earlier this year, plans to make a decision within the next couple of days.

Birk was activated from the physically unable to perform list and worked out with the Vikings in a limited practice Wednesday afternoon. The center, who is recovering from a hip operation, does not plan to rush back into action. He will not play in Friday's exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Birk said he remains on schedule in his recovery from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, and barring any setbacks, he will be ready for the start of the 2005 regular season. However, the Vikings' center likely will be placed on the physically unable to perform list in the near future and miss most of training camp.

According to Vikings trainer Chuck Barta, Birk will need 2-3 months of recovery time after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. Although the veteran center likely will miss a good portion of training camp, he should be ready for the start of the 2005 regular season.

Birk, who missed some time last season after undergoing hernia surgeries, will be forced to go under the knife yet again -- this time to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. The Vikings' offensive lineman is expected to be recovered by the start of training camp.
