Brian Griese

8/12/2006

Griese was 6-for-7 for 134 yards with two touchdowns in the Chicago Bears' preseason game on Friday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Griese agreed to a five-year contract with Chicago on Tuesday and plans to compete with Rex Grossman for the Bears' starting quarterback position. The 31-year-old went 5-1 for Tampa Bay last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The Buccaneers chose to waive him rather than pay a $2.6 million roster bonus.

Griese has been placed on injured reserve with torn ligaments in his left knee, ending his season. He finishes the 2005 campaign with 112 completions in 174 attempts for 1,136 yards, with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Griese has been diagnosed with a sprained left knee, but will undergo more tests over the next couple of days to determine exactly how serious the injury is. The veteran quarterback went down in the second quarter of Sunday's matchup with the Miami Dolphins and was unable to return to the Buccaneers' lineup. He was replaced under center by backup Chris Simms.

After averaging just 162.7 yards passing over his first three games of the 2005 campaign, Griese aired it out in the Buccaneers' victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, finishing with 302 yards and two touchdowns. However, his day was not perfect, as he threw three interceptions, was sacked three times and lost a fumble. His 66.4 passer rating was his lowest of the season.
