Ronde Barber

8/3/2006

Barber signed a five-year contract extension late Wednesday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 10th-year cornerback was entering the final of a six-year contract he signed in 2000. The new deal is worth up to $24 million.

Barber wants to play his entire career for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is on the verge of signing a contract extension that will give him a chance to do so.

Barber became the first cornerback in NFL history with 20 career interceptions and 20 career sacks in Sunday's victory over Carolina. The Buccaneers' veteran had one interception, the 28th of his career, as well as his 20th career sack. "He's a legend now," Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said. "I just hope he gets the national credit, the notoriety that a player of this magnitude deserves -- 20 sacks and 20 picks, it's never been done before in the history of football."

12/5/2005

Barber intercepted three passes in the Buccaneers' victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, matching a career high for picks in a game. The veteran cornerback's last and only other three-pick outing came in 2001, coincidentally also against the Saints.

Barber has been fined $30,000 by the NFL for inadvertently hitting umpire Butch Hannah in the eye during a scuffle with Kevin Mawae of the New York Jets last weekend. The Buccaneers' veteran defensive back was not ejected from the game for his actions.
