Smith signed with Houston on Monday, giving the Texans a backup running back for starter Domanick Davis. Smith played for New Orleans last season, rushing for 659 yards and three touchdowns while filling in for Deuce McAllister, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. The 34-year-old Smith has 6,881 yards and 54 touchdowns in his career during stints with New England, Tennessee, Buffalo and New Orleans.

For the third time in the last four games, Smith was in the starting backfield for the New Orleans Saints in Sunday's matchup with the Chicago Bears. Splitting touches with Aaron Stecker, the veteran running back rushed for 110 yards on 17 carries, topping the century mark for the first time since 2003. Smith is averaging 5.9 yards per carry over his last four games.

Despite losing a fumble, Smith had a productive day overall in Sunday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Filling in for Deuce McAllister, who is out for the season with a knee injury, the 33-year-old running back rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

Smith will take over as the New Orleans Saints' starting tailback going forward, as an MRI on Deuce McAllister's injured right knee has revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament, ending his 2005 campaign. The 33-year-old running back has appeared in all five of the Saints' games this season, picking up 73 yards on 26 carries.
