Brady Smith

11/23/2005

Sidelined since Week 6 with a dislocated toe on his right foot, Smith is not expected to be ready for Thursday's matchup with the Detroit Lions. The defensive end has yet to resume practicing with the team, and there currently is no exact timetable for his return.

Smith likely won't be allowed to do much over the next couple of weeks after dislocating a toe on his right foot during Monday's victory over the New York Jets. The Falcons' defensive end, who has eight tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in five games this season, will be re-evaluated following the team's bye to monitor his progress.

Smith continues to be ahead of schedule in his recovery from nerve-root decompression surgery, and the Falcons are confident that the nine-year veteran will be ready for the team's Week 1 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles on September 12. Although he likely won't play in Thursday's exhibition meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the defensive end is expected to be cleared for contact drills at practice this week.

Due to continued pain in his neck, Smith underwent a nerve-root decompression surgery on Saturday, according to the Atlanta Falcons. The defensive end will be sidelined for at least six weeks, meaning he will miss at least all of training camp and possibly the start of the 2005 regular season. In 16 games last year, Smith finished with 30 tackles, six sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception and a defensive touchdown.
