Stephen Davis

3/1/2006

Davis was released by the Panthers in an effort to get the team under the salary cap for the upcoming season. He was scheduled to make $3.8 million with a $1.05 million roster bonus on Friday. His release clears around $1.8 million off the salary cap. The Panthers cut loose the 10-year-veteran, as well as defensive tackle Brenston Buckner and running back/kick returner Rod Smart.

12/18/2005

The Panthers placed Davis on injured reserve Saturday due to a swollen right knee, ending his season. The three-time Pro Bowl running back finishes the season with 180 carries for 549 yards and a team-record 12 touchdowns.

12/16/2005

Davis' knee did not respond well to Thursday's workout, and due to continued swelling and soreness, he has been downgraded from questionable to doubtful for Sunday's meeting with the New Orleans Saints. Panthers head coach John Fox didn't seem optimistic about the veteran running back's chances of playing this weekend. For the season, he has 549 yards and 12 touchdowns on 180 carries in 13 contests.

12/15/2005

Davis was able to practice with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, but after reporting some soreness and swelling in his troublesome knee, he was added to the team's injury report as questionable. The veteran running back will be re-evaluated over the next couple of days and might be a game-time decision for Sunday's matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

12/8/2005

On Thursday, Davis admitted that he has lost his spot in the Carolina Panthers' starting lineup, as DeShaun Foster will step into the role, beginning with this Sunday's meeting against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite getting the nod last weekend, the veteran running back recorded just five touches in a victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

12/5/2005

Davis was in the Panthers' starting lineup for Sunday's meeting with the Atlanta Falcons, but he picked up just eight yards on five carries before giving way to DeShaun Foster, who handled the bulk of the rushing load the rest of the contest. After averaging 17.7 carries and scoring 12 touchdowns over his first nine games of the season, the veteran running back has rushed just 16 times with no scores over his last three games combined.

11/7/2005

Davis continues to split touches with DeShaun Foster in the Panthers' running attack, but he is making the most of his carries. In Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the veteran tailback picked up 48 yards on 12 rushes -- four fewer carries than Foster -- and he scored two touchdowns for the second consecutive week.

10/31/2005

Davis was forced to leave Sunday's win over the Minnesota Vikings after taking a shot to his surgically repaired knee in the first quarter. However, everything checked out fine when he was evaluated on the sidelines, and the running back was able to return to the Panthers' lineup. He finished with 40 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Davis might be limited in practice this week as a precautionary measure, but expect him to be ready for Carolina's next game.

10/14/2005

To rest his surgically repaired knee, Davis did not practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday, but he was back on the field and took part in Wednesday's workout without any problems. Although the running back remains listed as questionable on the injury report, he is confident that he'll be in the starting lineup for Sunday's meeting with the Detroit Lions.

10/12/2005

As was the case last week, Davis did not practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday in order to rest his surgically repaired knee. The veteran running back, who will be listed as questionable on the team's injury report, hopes to return to the field within the next day or two and be ready for Sunday's tussle with the Detroit Lions.

10/7/2005

As a precautionary measure, Davis did not practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday, but he was back on the field for Thursday's workout. The veteran running back, who is coming off major knee surgery, currently is listed as probable for Sunday's meeting with the Arizona Cardinals, but fully plans on being in the starting lineup. In four games this season, he has 245 yards and six touchdowns on 73 carries.

10/4/2005

Davis was held to just 51 yards on 19 carries in Monday night's victory over the Green Bay Packers, but he found the end zone twice, notching his fifth and sixth touchdowns of the 2005 campaign. After picking up 6.2 yards per carry in the Panthers' season opener, the veteran running back has averaged just 2.7 yards per rush over his last three contests.

9/23/2005

Davis reported no problems with his sore neck after returning to practice with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, and he plans to be in the starting backfield for Sunday's tussle with the Miami Dolphins. The veteran running back, who also was upgraded from questionable to probable on the injury report, missed some time earlier this week, due to the minor ailment.

9/22/2005

Davis was held out of practice on Wednesday, due to an unspecified neck injury. The Panthers' running back, who has 158 yards and four touchdowns on 38 carries in two games this season, currently is listed as questionable for Sunday's meeting with the Miami Dolphins. His status and availability likely will be updated over the next couple of days.

9/19/2005

The Carolina Panthers called Davis' number early and often in Sunday's 27-17 victory over the New England Patriots. The veteran running back logged 25 carries, picking up 77 yards and scoring three touchdowns. All three scores came from one yard out. Davis, who missed most of training camp while recovering from microfracture surgery on his right knee, reported no problems with the joint after the game.

9/12/2005

Davis reported no problems with his surgically repaired right knee following Sunday's 2005 opener against the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers' veteran running back, who was making his first regular-season appearance since last October, got the starting nod and rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. He missed most of training camp while recovering from microfracture surgery on the knee.

9/11/2005

As anticipated, Davis will get the starting nod when the Panthers take the field in their 2005 regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints. The veteran running back, who missed most of training camp while recovering from mircrofracture surgery on his right knee, worked out with the Panthers' first-team offense all week.

9/9/2005

Head coach John Fox has not indicated who will be in the starting backfield for Sunday's season opener against the New Orleans Saints, but it appears Davis will get the nod. The veteran running back, who missed most of training camp while recovering from microfracture surgery on his right knee, has been working out with the Panthers' first-team offense all week.

9/2/2005

Despite missing most of training camp while recovering from mircrofracture surgery on his right knee, Davis is expected to go into the 2005 campaign as the Panthers' starting tailback. The veteran returned to action in Thursday's preseason finale against the Steelers, picking up 17 yards on five carries.

8/31/2005

Davis will see his first game action since undergoing mircrofracture surgery on his right knee last November when he takes the field in Thursday's preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Panthers have been very cautious with the running back in training camp this year after he was limited to just two games last season.

8/24/2005

Davis returned to practice with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday and took part in his first contact workout since undergoing mircrofracture surgery on his right knee last November. The running back lined up with the first-team offense, made several sharp cuts and appeared to be running without any problems. He is hoping to make his 2005 preseason debut in the Panthers' exhibition finale against the Steelers on September 1.

8/22/2005

Davis' recovery from the mircrofracture surgery he underwent on his right knee last November remains on schedule, and the running back was cleared to resume practicing with the Panthers on Monday, including contact drills. Limited to just two games in 2004, Davis is hoping to play in Carolina's exhibition finale against the Steelers on September 1 and be ready for the start of the regular season.

8/10/2005

Davis has expanded his individual workouts as he continues to recover from the mircrofracture surgery he underwent on his right knee last November. However, the running back has yet to be cleared to take part in team practices, and his availability for the start of the regular season is still in question. Currently, Davis is on the physically unable to perform list, but he is optimistic that he'll be activated in time for the team's third or fourth preseason game.

7/28/2005

Davis continues to recover from the mircrofracture surgery he underwent on his right knee last November, and he is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp. As a result, the Carolina Panthers plan to place him on the physically unable to perform list for the time being, although the club is optimistic that the running back will be available for the start of the 2005 regular season. He appeared in just two games last year.

6/8/2005

Davis participated in several running drills with his Carolina teammates on Wednesday, the next step in his rehab from the mircrofracture surgery he underwent on his right knee last November. The running back ran sprints at half speed, and said that it felt great to get back on the practice field. The Panthers hope that Davis will be able to participate fully in training camp later this summer and be ready for the regular-season opener.

4/28/2005

Davis, who underwent microfracture surgery on his troublesome right knee last November, continues to be on schedule in his recovery, and he plans to be at full strength by the start of the 2005 campaign, according to his agent. The Panthers likely will hold the running back out of the majority of their offseason workouts as a precautionary measure, but anticipate him being available for training camp. Davis was limited to just two games last season.
