Wayne Chrebet

5/31/2006

The New York Jets scheduled a news conference for Friday to officially announce Chrebet's retirement. A series of concussions forced the Jets' wide receiver to end his 11-year career. His 580 catches rank second on the team's all-time list behind Don Maynard's 627.

Due to several head injuries over the past few seasons, Chrebet has decided to retire from the NFL. After signing as an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra, the receiver spent his entire 11-year career with the New York Jets, finishing with 580 catches -- second most in franchise history -- for 7,365 yards and 70 touchdowns in 152 games.

After suffering at least the ninth concussion of his career, Chrebet has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Jets, officially ending his 2005 campaign. The veteran receiver hit his head hard on the turf after taking a shot from safety Jerry Wilson late in Sunday's loss to the San Diego Chargers, and he needed help untying his shoes and taking his jersey and pads off after the game.
