Fields's attempt for an NFL comeback was setback when the Panthers said they weren't interested in bringing him back. Fields missed all of the 2005 seson to undergo chemotherapy following a relapse of his Hodgkin's disease.

Tests have revealed that Field's cancer is back, and he will miss the entire 2005 campaign as a result. The 32-year-old linebacker, who sat out the 2003 season while battling Hodgkin's disease, returned to action last year and recorded 62 tackles, four sacks, one interception and a forced fumble in 14 games, including 10 starts. He was named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl.
