Doug Brien

10/13/2005

Brien's early season struggles on the field, as well as his recent battle with back spasms, have resulted in him being released by the Chicago Bears. The veteran kicker, who hit just one of his four field-goal attempts prior to missing last week's game with injury, will be replaced by Robbie Gould.

Brien was downgraded to questionable on the Bears' injury report late in the week and now has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns, due to back spasms. In his absence, Robbie Gould, who signed with the team on Saturday, will handle the kicking duties this weekend.

Brien, who was released by the New York Jets after they selected Mike Nugent in last month's NFL draft, has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears. The veteran kicker was 24-for-29 on field-goal attempts and 33 of 34 on point-after tries in 16 regular-season games in 2004, but missed a pair of field goals in the Jets' final playoff contest, which likely sealed his fate.

Brien has been released by the New York Jets. The veteran kicker, who was 24-for-29 on field-goal attempts and 33 of 34 on point-after tries in 16 regular-season games in 2004, became expendable when the team selected All-American Mike Nugent in the second round of last weekend's NFL Draft.
