Jerome Bettis
2/6/2006
Bettis, the NFL's fifth all-time leading rusher, announced after Sunday's 21-10 Super Bowl win over the Seahawks that he is retiring. The Steelers' running back rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries in his final game. "I'm a champion. I think the Bus' last stop is here in Detroit," Bettis said. "It's official, like the referee whistle."
1/22/2006
Bettis ran 15 times for 39 yards and one touchdown in the Steelers' 34-17 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC championship game Sunday.
1/2/2006
Bettis rushed for 41 yards and three touchdowns in the Steelers' 35-21 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday in what could have been the running back's final home game in Pittsburgh.
12/12/2005
Bettis was available for duty in Sunday's meeting with the Chicago Bears, despite missing some practice time last week to rest the sore knee that has been bothering him for more than a month. The Steelers' veteran running back didn't appear limited by the ailment, rushing for a team-high 101 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
12/8/2005
Bettis, who has been nursing a sore knee for more than a month, did not practice with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday. However, the veteran running back is expected to work out with the team over the next couple of days and be ready for Sunday's tussle with the Chicago Bears. Officially, he has been listed as probable on the injury report.
11/20/2005
Bettis will suit up for today's game against the Baltimore Ravens as backup to returning starter Willie Parker.
11/11/2005
Although he hasn't practiced with the Steelers this week, Bettis has reported significant improvement in his sore knee/quadriceps, and barring any setbacks, he will be in uniform for Sunday's meeting with the Cleveland Browns. The veteran running back continues to be listed as questionable on the injury report, but at this point, it appears he will be cleared to play.
11/9/2005
Bettis likely will miss his second consecutive game, according to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, as he continues to be bothered by soreness in his knee/quadriceps. The veteran running back, who was downgraded to doubtful after not practicing with the team last week, initially will be listed as questionable on this week's injury report, Cowher said.
11/5/2005
It looks increasingly unlikely that Bettis will play Sunday for Pittsburgh against Green Bay, after not participating in Friday's practice.
11/3/2005
According to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, Bettis continues to be bothered by a sore quadriceps muscle, and it appears he will not be available for Sunday's battle with the Green Bay Packers. After not practicing with the team on Wednesday, the veteran running back was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on the injury report.
10/11/2005
Bettis made his first appearance in a game this season in the Steelers' 24-22 win over San Diego, after missing the previous three games with a strained calf muscle. Providing a complement to speed back Willie Parker, Bettis powered his way to 54 yards on 17 rushes and one touchdown. He added a reception for 16 yards.
10/4/2005
Bettis plans to practice without limitations this week, and he continues to work his way back from a strained calf muscle. Barring a last-minute setback, the Steelers' veteran running back should be available to make his 2005 regular-season debut in Monday night's meeting with the San Diego Chargers. He's been sidelined since suffering the injury in a preseason game against the Redskins in late August.
9/29/2005
Bettis was able to practice with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday and reported no problems with his strained calf muscle. The veteran running back had been limited to individual workouts since suffering the injury in a preseason meeting with the Washington Redskins late last month, but it appears he is getting closer to being ready for game action.
9/20/2005
Bettis has resumed light running, but he's still not ready for game action. According to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, the veteran running back will be listed as doubtful for Sunday's meeting with the New England Patriots. He has been sidelined for nearly a month with a strained right calf.
9/18/2005
Bettis is not active for Pittsburgh's game against Houston Sunday. He remains out with a strained right calf that he injured during a preseason game. The Steelers anticipate that Bettis will be ready to face New England in Week 3.
9/13/2005
According to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, Bettis' strained right calf continues to get better, but the veteran running back will be listed as doubtful for Sunday's meeting with the Houston Texans. Bettis has been limited to individual workouts since suffering the injury in a preseason meeting with the Washington Redskins late last month.
9/6/2005
Bettis' strained right calf has shown some improvement over the last week, but not enough for the Steelers to put him on the field in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Tennessee Titans. The veteran running back, who is expected to be listed as out on this week's injury report, did some limited individual work on Monday, but failed to take part in any team drills.
8/29/2005
An MRI on Bettis' strained right calf was inconclusive, but the Steelers already have ruled him out for at least the next two weeks. The veteran running back, who suffered the injury in Friday's preseason meeting with the Washington Redskins, will undergo more tests later this week when the swelling in his leg subsides. With Duce Staley also sidelined with a knee injury, the team will look to Willie Parker to begin the regular season as the top tailback.
8/27/2005
A right calf injury forced Jerome Bettis to leave Friday's preseason game against the Redskins in the first quarter. An MRI exam is scheduled for Saturday.
5/25/2005
Bettis participated with the Steelers in on-field workouts for the first time this year on Tuesday, seeing some action at the halfback position. The 12-year NFL veteran, who is fifth on the all-time list with 13,294 rushing yards, reportedly had been contemplating retirement during the offseason. He led the Steelers with 941 yards and 13 touchdowns (a career high) on the ground last year while making just six starts.
