Tommy Maddox

3/3/2006

Maddox, who lost his starting quarterback's job shortly after Ben Roethlisberger's arrival in 2004, was released Friday by the Pittsburgh Steelers in a long-expected salary cap move.

11/22/2005

With Ben Roethlisberger expected to return to the Steelers' starting lineup for Monday night's battle with the undefeated Indianapolis Colts, Maddox will slip down a spot on the team's depth chart and resume his duties as a backup. The veteran quarterback has appeared in five games this season, including two starts, going 34 of 71 for 406 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He's also been sacked eight times and lost two fumbles.

With Ben Roethlisberger not quite recovered from minor knee surgery and Charlie Batch out at least a couple of weeks with a broken finger, Maddox will get the starting nod against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, according to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. The veteran quarterback has struggled in four appearances this season, going 15 of 35 for 176 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions and a lost fumble.

10/16/2005

Maddox is the starting quarterback for Pittsburgh against Jacksonville on Sunday, according to reports from ESPN and FOX. The veteran backup will start over the injured Ben Roethlisberger, despite a calf injury that threatened Maddox' availability. Charlie Batch will be the Steelers' backup, while Roethlisberger will be active as the third-string option in case of an emergency.

10/14/2005

Maddox has been practicing with the Steelers the last two days and has not reported any problems with the calf muscle he strained during a workout late last week. As a result, the veteran quarterback has been upgraded from questionable to probable on the team's injury report, and he should be available for Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers might even give him the starting nod.

10/13/2005

As anticipated, Maddox was able to practice with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, testing out his sore calf muscle. The quarterback, who injured his leg during a workout late last week, reported no major problems and should be available for Sunday's meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars, at least in a backup role. He has yet to appear in a game this season. The Steelers have listed Maddox as questionable on the injury report.

10/11/2005

According to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, futher tests on Maddox' strained calf muscle have revealed that the injury is not as severe as initially thought, and the veteran quarterback could be ready for Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Maddox was hurt in practice late last week and was unavailable for Monday night's victory over the San Diego Chargers.

10/8/2005

Maddox is doubtful for Monday night's game against the San Diego Chargers, after straining his left calf during practice on Friday.
