Dustin Nippert

3/27/2006

Nippert, a highly regarded pitching prospect making a bid for a rotation spot with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was optioned to the minor leagues Monday. The 24-year-old right-hander probably begins the new season with Triple-A Tucson after going 8-3 with a 2.38 ERA in 18 starts for Double-A Tennessee in 2005. He made four starts and posted a 3.46 ERA and 12 strikeouts over 13 innings this spring.

Nippert made his major league debut on Thursday, allowing five hits and three runs to Pittsburgh in five innings. With a 4-3 lead, he left after tearing a fingernail while throwing a knucklecurve.

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled Nippert from Double-A Tennessee on Saturday, then surprised the 24-year-old righthander with news that he would make his major league debut in Thursday's start against Pittsburgh. For Tennessee this season, Nippert was 8-3 with a 2.38 ERA in 18 starts.
