Van Buren was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday in time for Boston's home game against the Kansas City Royals.

The Cubs traded Van Buren to the Red Sox on Thursday for a player to be named later or cash. The 25-year-old righthander made his Major League debut on Aug. 31 and went 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA in six relief appearances for Chicago. He had a franchise-record 25 saves for Class AAA Iowa last season before being called up to the Majors.

On Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs officially put Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list to have shoulder surgery and recalled Van Buren from Triple-A Iowa to take his spot in the Cubs' bullpen. In 52 relief appearances for Iowa, the 25-year-old righthander is 2-3 with a 1.98 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 54.2 innings.
