Ryan Zimmerman

7/5/2006

Zimmerman hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth to lift the Nationals over the Florida Marlins 6-4 on Tuesday. It was Zimmerman's second game-winning homer in less than three weeks. He hit a two-run shot in the ninth to beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on June 18. "They're all good," Zimmerman said. "Can't take away anything from a game-winning hit. They're all special."

Zimmerman's first major league home run was a memorable one. He stroked a ninth-inning bomb off Mets closer Billy Wagner to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. The Nationals scored five times in the 10th to win, 9-5.

Zimmerman, the fourth overall pick in last June's draft, is in line to become Washington's starting third baseman in the spring after the Nationals traded Vinny Castilla to San Diego Thursday. Zimmerman paved the way for the deal in his first pro season by reaching Double-A Harrisburg and batting .326 with 20 doubles, nine homers and 32 RBIs in 63 games there. He hit .397 (23-for-58) with 10 doubles for Washington in September.

The fourth overall pick in this year's draft, Zimmerman made his first major league start Wednesday, going 1-for-4 with a double. He is the first of his draft class to see major league action, debuting with a pinch hitting appearance on September 1.
