Mike Jacobs

5/16/2006

Jacobs was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a three-run homer and a career-high six RBIs in Florida's 11-8 loss to Atlanta Monday night. It was his first three-hit game of the season, and in his last three contests, the Marlins' first baseman is 6-for-12 with two doubles and two dingers. The surge has pushed his average to .218 for the season.

Jacobs had the first multihomer game of his major league career, going deep twice in Wednesday's blowout victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The catcher/first baseman, who had a two-run shot in the second inning and a solo blast in the ninth, finished the contest 4-for-5 with a double, walk, four RBI and five runs scored.

Serving as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning of Sunday's meeting with the Washington Nationals, Jacobs connected for a three-run bomb off Esteban Loaiza, becoming just the fourth player in Mets history to homer in his first major league at-bat. The 24-year-old catcher was called up from Double-A Binghamton last week to serve as insurance in Mike Piazza's absence.

With Mike Piazza expected to miss a few days with a hairline fracture in his left hand, the New York Mets have purchased Jacobs' contract from Double-A Binghamton to supply the team with some insurance behind the plate. The 24-year-old catcher will serve as a backup to Ramon Castro and likely won't see much playing time.
