Joe Saunders

8/1/2006

Saunders will make his second start this season and fourth career start on Tuesday when the Angels face the Oakland Athletics. Saunders is taking the place of Bartolo Colon, who is on the disabled list with tendinitis.

With veteran lefty Jarrod Washburn battling forearm tendinitis, the Angels will give the ball to Saunders on Wednesday night. The 24-year-old rookie lefthander will make his second big league start against Seattle. He made his major league debut in mid-August, limiting Toronto to two runs over 7.1 innings, but he didn't get a win for his quality outing.

Saunders allowed just two runs and five hits over 7.1 innings in his major league debut against Toronto Tuesday, but he was gone when the Jays claimed a 4-3 win over the Angels with a two-run rally in the ninth. The 12th overall pick in the 2002 draft, the 24-year-old lefty retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced.

With Paul Byrd experiencing back spasms over the weekend, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim recalled Saunders to start for Byrd Tuesday against Toronto. To open the door to Saunders' major league debut, the Angels optioned top catching prospect Jeff Mathis to Triple-A Salt Lake.
