Jeff Harris

9/21/2005

After beating the Rangers and Yankees in a pair of solid starts at the end of August, Harris has lost his last four outings and turned in just one quality start. The rookie righthander has been replaced in the Seattle rotation by Gil Meche and will work out of the Mariners' bullpen. Harris is 2-5 with a 4.18 ERA in nine games (seven starts) for Seattle.

Called up from Triple-A Tacoma to start in place of the disabled Gil Meche, Harris came through for the Mariners, checking the hard-hitting Texas Rangers on four hits and one unearned run over seven innings to claim an 8-2 win.

With Gil Meche landing on the disabled list, Harris is scheduled to be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to start Thursday when the Mariners face the Texas Rangers.

The Seattle Mariners returned Harris to Triple-A Tacoma Sunday. After waiting more than a decade to reach the majors, the 31-year-old righthander stayed with the Mariners for 10 days. He was 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA in one start and two relief appearances.

It took more than a decade, but it was worth the wait. On Tuesday night, after Seattle starter Jorge Campillo left following the first inning with an elbow ailment, Harris made his major league debut by tossing five scoreless innings of relief. The 31-year-old righthander held the Detroit Tigers to three hits without a walk, and Seattle pulled out a 4-1 victory.

With Ryan Franklin suspended and Jeff Nelson placed on the bereavement list following a death in the family, Harris has earned his first callup to the big leagues from the Seattle Mariners. The 31-year-old righthander is 10-2 with a 2.62 ERA and a save in 10 starts and 16 relief appearances between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tacoma.
