Craig Breslow

8/14/2006

The Red Sox recalled Breslow on Monday in an effort to help their overworked and struggling bullpen. He was called up one day after relievers Manny Delcarmen, Craig Hansen and Jonathan Papelbon all pitched poorly in an 11-9 win over Baltimore.

The Red Sox purchased Breslow's contract from Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. Left-hander Lenny DiNardo was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Breslow.

The San Diego Padres placed veteran Chris Hammond on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a neck sprain and recalled Breslow to take his spot in the bullpen. The rookie southpaw had made his major league debut during a one-day stay nearly a week ago, and he returns having worked 1.2 scoreless innings in the majors. The 24-year-old lefty was 2-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 40 relief appearances at Double-A Mobile this season.
