John Rodriguez

7/25/2005

Rodriguez was limited to pinch-hitting duties in Sunday's meeting with the Chicago Cubs, due to a sprained right ankle. The Cardinals' rookie outfielder, who suffered the injury when he tripped on an exposed nail in the team's dugout steps, plans to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday. St. Louis has an off-day on Monday.

Rodriguez left Saturday's game against the Cubs with a right ankle sprain. The Cardinals' rookie outfielder was running to second base with his second double of the game in the third inning, when he came up lame as he approached the bag. He was replaced in the game by Hector Luna.

Rodriguez belted the first home run of his major league career, connecting on a pitch from Milwaukee's Ben Sheets in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Brewers. The outfielder has started all three games since being recalled earlier this week, going 4-for-11 (.364) with an RBI and two runs scored. He is filling in for the injured Reggie Sanders.

The St. Louis Cardinals have purchased Rodriguez' contract from Triple-A Memphis, filling the roster spot of injured veteran Reggie Sanders. The 27-year-old outfielder has been on fire since being acquired from the Cleveland Indians last month, batting .342 with 17 home runs and 47 RBI in 34 games with the Cardinals' top affiliate. He will be making his major league debut.
