To open up a roster spot for the Yankees' Monday starter, Kevin Brown, New York optioned Cabrera to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday. The 20-year-old, switch-hitting outfielder was 4-for-19 (.211) with a run scored in his first major league stint.

The New York Yankees have purchased Cabrera's contract from Triple-A Columbus, where he was hitting .324 with three home runs and 11 RBI in nine games. The outfielder, who is one of the organization's top prospects, began the 2005 campaign at the Double-A level, batting .267 with nine homers and 44 RBI in 75 games with Trenton. He fills the roster spot of injured starting pitcher Carl Pavano.
