Cortez has been optioned to Triple-A Durham by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after notching just one hit in 13 at-bats during his short stint with the major league club. The 23-year-old infielder will be replaced on the roster by pitcher Doug Waechter, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

After Chris Singleton was released on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays called up Cortez from Triple-A Durham before Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. The 23-year-old second baseman batted .278 in 21 games at Durham after beginning the season at Double-A Montgomery. Overall, he hit .317 with 21 stolen bases in 76 games for Durham and Montgomery.
