Scott Olsen

3/29/2006

The Florida Marlins optioned Olsen to Triple-A Albuquerque Wednesday, but he'll return as the Marlins' fifth starter to face the Washington Nationals on April 15. Olsen posted a 2.75 ERA over five starts this spring. He was 1-1 with a 3.98 ERA in four starts and a relief appearance with Florida in 2005.

As expected, Olsen, not Al Leiter, will be the starting pitcher for the Marlins' game Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Olsen won his first career start on June 25, allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, just one day after having his contract purchased from Double-A Carolina.

The Florida Marlins have purchased Olsen's contract from Double-A Carolina to fill the fifth spot in the starting rotation until Josh Beckett is able to return from injury. The 21-year-old lefthander will be making his major league debut when he takes the mound against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Saturday. Reliever Travis Smith was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to open a spot on the roster.
